Kara is right. All the focus on Toad hides the structural problems that made him possible. Toad never got a majority of anything, and he would not have become a candidate in the first place without the structural changes in the 'Pub Party that were being driven by actual 'Pubby voters.
It comes back to a deep insecurity in a segment of the White population that never dealt with their inherent bigotry in any helpful way. Politicians who know better allowed this to fester in pursuit of power, and then the horde started electing its own as the "establishment" 'Pubby leaders reaped the electoral spoils.
The 'Pubby leaders used that alienation of racist White people as a tool to terrify voters into voting for them, and then it ate their lunch as the monster escaped the castle. They are gone now and the 'pubs are full of horde and cowards, too terrified to do anything but what the most extreme cray-cray wants them to do. It's the politics of outrage and punishment. They want to hurt people they think are taking away their God Given privilege and superiority. Look at what Abbot is doing on the border of Texas. Some whistle-blower was saying on NPR that they were told to throw migrant women and children back into the river and let them drown.

Defeating Toad will not end this or make it go away.
If not Toad, there would have been someone else. This was going to happen eventually the moment that Nixon made his deal with the racist South, because what the horde wants is inherently Unconstitutional, and the only way to get it is to destroy the rule of law.
