Exactly. Trump is a buffoon. He's an moron. He's a day-trader- he has no strategy. There is no plan. He is only going to do what makes him money or brings people to the throne to worship him.

The other people that you have named are far more dangerous. They are strategic. They know history. They lie. They manipulate. They know the law and where the levers are located. If they are back in the power structure, they can do real damage, regardless of who the occupant of the White House is.

I doubt if Amicus Curae briefs not in favour of Trump will influence the conservative majority though, except to give them the arguments they will need to reverse engineer to rule in Trump's favour.

Meanwhile, NY Times is reporting that Trump's PACs covered the $50 million in legal expenses for 2023. Congress really needs to close the tax loophole on PACs.

Haley has started calling out Trump's blowing through millions on legal expenses (although she lives in a glass house considering how many millions of dollars her campaign has spent for her losing efforts in the Republican primary).
“Another reason Donald Trump won’t debate me… His PAC spent [$]50 MILLION in campaign dollars on his legal fees,” Haley posted on X (formerly Twitter). “He can’t beat Joe Biden if he’s spending all his time and money on court cases and chaos.”

The problem or the incentive is always going to be when the firms hear that $50 million has been paid out...so obviously some lawyers somewhere are making money off his nonsense.

It also opens up access to some of the real dark eminences behond Trump. If they can then use him to snag business from his contacts...he is nothing more than a loss leader.

I agree that PAC's need to be totally reined in...but no one of any political stripe wants that loophole closed.

Those numbers are all self-reported; that money could be anywhere. No self-respecting lawyer thinks he's going to get paid. The ones who work for Toad are either doing it for other reasons, or they're just stupid - OR someone else is paying them.
 
Well certainly smart money from people who hate Trump would be flowing to Habba.

^This is the issue. Trump has a history of "creative accounting".

$50 million is a shitload of money. Granted, he's been paying for the legal fees of his co-defendants, several of whom in the Mar-A-Lago case are also Trump Organization employees. But there was also evidence that some of the money had been funneled to Trump properties in the form of "rent" and "hotel stays".

Someone should be digging into where this money is going.

The FEC board is paralyzed by being 50% Republican and 50% Democrat. The chair of the FEC is Sean Cooksey, a Republican who was previously on the staff of Sen Josh Hawley, was appointed to the FEC by... wait for it... Donald Trump. The FEC non-partisan staff listened to the testimony and findings of the Jan 6th Commission and they recommended that the FEC board investigate Trump's fundraising and use of funds. The Republican members of the FEC board are blocking the investigation.

The DOJ is dragging its feet and is having staffing issues dealing with the volume of Jan 6th cases that are going to trial.

Being underwater in fundraising in the most recent year can't be a good thing.

And what will the impact on MAGAt donors be...after seeing how much of their donations goes to pay a billionaire's legal fees and not to the campaign.

The political operation still entered 2024 with a surplus due to strong fundraising in prior years. But spending at a higher rate than they have been able to take in so far is nonetheless a red flag heading into the general election year.
