Seems like it was just a run of the mill mentally ill conspiracy theorist who may have sensed an opportunity...

Max Azzarello, age 37 from (wait for it) Florida. He died from his injuries.

From the reports, it appears that he had a fairly normal life until recently. His mother passed away a couple of years ago and that appears to have sent him down the Aaron Rodgers path of conspiracy theories and poor hairdo choices. He recently was committed under the Baker Act to an inpatient psych unit after being arrested at a St Augustine, FL hotel standing outside the hotel with a bullhorn in his underwear chanting incoherent, and at times, vulgar slogans at the hotel.

It's unclear how he got from Florida to NYC but he was familiar with the area since he went to graduate school at Rutgers and his mother was living in New Jersey at the time of her death. His death does appear to be related more to his mental health declines.

On a related note, apparently the judge has been allowing members of the public into the courtroom this week. A reporter commented that this seems to have created a situation where mentally ill people are waiting for a couple of hours for admission.

Like everything else that Trump touches, this too has become a shitshow... and we haven't even started the trial yet.

The defense successfully challenged a man who said he owns a minority stake in the company that produced Michael Cohen's "Mea Culpa" podcast and said he has a "fairly negative" opinion of former President Trump based on his "negative, divisive rhetoric."

The judge confronted the man with several social media posts, including one referring to Trump with the words "sociopathic incompetence" and another saying of Trump, "I do believe that he is actually the devil."

The judge asked if that reflected his opinion. "I would say it's not far off base," the man replied, and he was immediately excused.

There was nothing suggesting the Court allowed the juror to present evidence of his claim.

I am thinking that the courthouse and area outside it may be cleared of spectators after this. It is sad that his descent into mental illness would have ended this way, but now police will end up having to watch out for copycat suicides.

I'm actually kinda impressed he could fit one in there. Most underwear won't stretch that far.

On a serious note, how sad for this poor man. He's crazy as a loon, and obviously hooked by the obsessive coverage of all the conspiracy theories.

He was institutionalized. He must have lied to them convincingly enough to not be held. Imagine the pain for him, his loved ones, and onlookers. You could never forget witnessing an immolation.

In one of his posts, he made a joke about getting socks. Upon admission, psych hospitals often take way their shoes. They are given non-slip socks to cover their feet.

Since it was in Florida, the police probably had him admitted under Baker Act. Like in most States, it's a 72 hour inpatient confine, hold and evaluate order. After 72 hours, the patient can sign themselves out, if they agree to outpatient treatment (a requirement that has no enforcement mechanism). It would require a court order to hold him past 72 hours.

He listed his employment as "self-employed researcher" which means that he probably didn't have health insurance. Florida is one of the 10 States that still have not expanded Medicaid. This is also another factor that would make it likely that he would have been released after 72 hours.

These "hold and evaluate" laws are uniformly ineffective for getting help for the people who need it. If they were effective, the limited number of hospital beds available would be filled with conspiracy theorists and the QAnon crowd.
