Trump this.

It is actually pretty depressing to be witness to a wide swath of voters in the US who don't understand or care about the demolition of their democracy because they don't see how it is relevant to their own self-interest.

Weird isn't it when all these people wouldn't wear a mask to prevent spread of a virus but wear bandages over a wound they don't have?

Revelation 13:3 (NIV): One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast.

I don't think that's going to happen. We can get married, right? Wasn't that the Real Big Deal we wanted? I always thought so. And you can't fire someone for being gay now anymore than you can fire them for being from Quebec or California or by the color of their skin.
Project 2025 wants to take away the right for homosexuals to marry. Obergefell is definitely in their sights.

GLAAD has done some of the reading for you....Project 2025 promises to:

  • Strip away non-discrimination protections:
    • Removing terms including “sexual orientation,” “gender identity,” “diversity,” “equity,” “inclusion,” “gender,” “abortion,” and “reproductive rights” from federal rules, regulations, contracts, grants, and legislation.
    • Restricting the application of the Supreme Court’s Bostock v. Clayton County decision, which extended workplace protections against sex discrimination to LGBTQ employees.
    • Rescinding regulations prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, and sex characteristics.
    • Defining “sex discrimination” narrowly as referring only to the “biological binary” of male and female as assigned at birth.

You are entitled to live with grief, but this is coming right for the rights you enjoyed with your partner and as an equal citizen in your own country.

I find it depressing that many view Trump as the end of Democracy, when it seems like it's been a long running problem. Democracy is not served by a long running situation where it often really doesn't matter who gets elected--the winner will serve the same corporate masters, instead of the voters interests.

I repeat myself, but I sure as hell didn't think that the "Democratic" Party's recent approach to presidential primaries is particularly democratic. As a private entity, the DNC can conduct business as it wants, I guess, but as a tax payer, I want to know why my tax dollars are being spent on their presidential primaries in my state. If they want do a primary, which will be engineered to get the results they want, they can pay for it.

I wonder if a lot of that wide swath of voters hasn't simply reached the same conclusions I have?

For some reason, I remember now something Jimmy Dore said about the people Trump surrounded himself with. I can't remember it exactly, but it was along the lines that Donald Trump drained the swamp--and found his cabinet!
I would say, "dredged the swamp".

Here's one of the Project 2025 list for example: my favorite "guy most likely to be arrested blowing a sailor in a Georgetown toilet", Roger Severino:

In addition to being a closet case, Severino's wife, who used to be one of Clarence Thomas' law clerks, is the one who helped get Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney-Barrett on the Supreme Court. It's a small world after all.

There is truth in this Niemöller quote.

What has pissed me off in the past, though, is when I encounter the expectation that I prop up that so precious "Democratic" Party, the person screaming at me seems totally unlikely to do anything to advocate for my interests. "Won't ever realistically be able to date? Fuck you! Vote Democrat anyway!"

What have democrats done for you? Do you have universal health care? We all know the republicans don’t want you to have that. Do you receive social security? We all know the republicans would love to take that away from you. Do you have the right to marry someone you love? That’s gone too.

We don't have universal health care. We just have the ACA, which has a lot in common with a right wing proposal of the 1990s. A lot of people are still uncovered. IIRC, Biden promised a public option, which probably would have helped, but that promise was reneged on. Did the ACA make things better in some ways and for some? Yes. But it can also be argued to be a horribly flawed bandage for deeply wounded system.
Do you receive social security?

Too young--and no telling if Social Security will even be around when the time comes.

It's worth noting that Biden was in favor of cuts (back when he was a Senator). Clinton was apparently ready to talk privatization.

Do you have the right to marry someone you love?

Pretty hard to get excited about a right that has no relevance. Given that I can't afford to date, let alone get married, it's hard to get excited about a right to marry.

What astonishes me is that American voters are so self-absorbed that unless someone devises a platform of policies specifically addressing their own interests, they won't vote for them.

And yet, when you look at the Project 2025 guidebook, Trump and the GOP intend to strip away all the programs and policies that protect every single person in the US.

As Alistair notes, destroying Medicare, Social Security, labour protections, Civil Rights protections, LGBTQ protections....on and on the list of damages they intend to inflict that will make life harder, dirtier and vastly more expensive for everyone but the super wealthy is detailed in their platform.

Anyhow...this thread is about Trump....the endless litany od complaints about how the Democrats don't meet expectations is for other threads.

The Democrats give you the right to bitch and whine. Try that when we've bitched and whined ourselves into autocracy.

They should be wearing one on both ears, since they're infamous for not listening.
