Trying to learn Spanish

I have a streak of 136 days on Duolingo max to learn Spanish, does anyone know if that’s all I need or should I take an actual Spanish class or something? I want to be conversational and not have to really think about what I’m saying

Duolingo is good for learning words and getting an introduction to spanish but if you want to learn how to speak it without thinking about what you are saying, duolingo won't do that for you. The best way to learn how to speak is to practice speaking. If you are uncomfortable at this point do that with people, you could just practice first by talking to yourself in Spanish. Make it so that its second nature. Eventually you will need to practice by speaking with others but this could be a good start.

Also you can watch tv or movies so you can listen to native speakers having actual conversations.
There are a lot of youtube vids,too.

Telenovelas and news broadcasts in Spanish are also good practice unless you have friends who speak it on a regular basis that you can hang out with.

The news is particularly helpful because knowing the context of what is on the screen and in the news report will help you be able to follow what is being said.

Telenovelas are also good for keeping your attention because the guys are caliente y muy guapo.

But if your goal is to master conversation, interacting with a Spanish-speaker is still the best way to pick up el coloquio.

I've also found that Duolingo is good as a supplement for learning words and phrases but it's not enough on its own to learn to speak. Best way to learn is with a native speaker face to face, but also consider Pimsleur as a voice coach if you don't have access to face to face learning. It costs money but it seems to be very good.

Yeah I think face to face talking and having conversations with people is the way to go. I need things explained to me like 4 year old

Remember that Spanish has many different accents and dialects, and some are harder than others. You may not understand everything at the beginning. Try to talk to people from the same group at first

It is true that, in my younger days, I spent more time in Latin American beds than in Spanish beds.

In Latin America, I heard "mi culo", "mi polla" and "mi verga" used (especially informally with a lover), whereas "el culo" with a reflexive verb was what I heard in Europe.

One thing that I haven't heard: what's the Spanish equivalent of "bussy"?

It may be a pronunciation issues but in Mexico, I heard "veniste", even though that's not the proper conjugation.

Also of note: on the west side of the Atlantic, "papi" gets used in bed a lot.
We should also do some comparisons and funny stories about the unique uses of "joder" "chingar", "coger" and "follar" in each country.

I have had some friends who visited Spain and had to suppress laughter when a they heard a Spanish guy say, "Voy a coger el autobús".

The same problem exists with the French verb, "baiser". It means "to kiss" but it also means "to fuck". After one has had a few drinks, it's important to be careful how one uses it.

It's not just Spaniards. I was barely in my 30s the first time someone called me, "Papi". My feelings were hurt. At least for a few moments.


All of this points to an earlier theme in this thread: it's really important to try your Spanish out in real conversations. One thing that I've noticed in every Spanish-speaking country: they will correct your Spanish, if you make a mistake. You'll use "bueno" once, before they correct it to "bien".

Let me stop you there and repeat something that I said earlier in the thread: Spanish speakers will correct your Spanish errors. It's a cultural thing and it is seldom done with malice.

I have been to other non-Spanish countries where mistakes are treated with snobbery or just overlooked. It is not that way with Spanish-speakers: they will usually correct you.

I have had 80 year old men correct my Spanish. I have had children correct my Spanish. I have pobrecitos correct my Spanish and I have had very affluent people correct my Spanish.

The correct response when someone, including the participants in this thread, give you a correction is to take it on board, and say, "Gracias", because they are trying to help you.
