I have several gay friends from Turkey and they all agree with you.

I gotta say, it's just as easy to get shot for being gay by some good ol' boy redneck right here in the U.S. of A.

All hail Sarah Palin! (Now where's the vomit smilie?)

A bit ironic to post this story when we're just a couple of days away from the 10th anniversary of the Matthew Shepard slaying.

Turkey is THE place for gays being shot

Versus the US, where we tie people up to a fence, bludgeon them and leave them to die of exposure?

In case you haven't noticed, there are some ignorant, hateful people on this site that are no more tolerant of different cultures than any terrorist you can name. Supremacy comes in all shapes and colors....and sexual orientations.

Like this one:

I really, really hate those effeminate guys. They prance around wearing woman's clothes, acting like complete pricks.
(and i'm not referring to drag queens. Drag queens are usually in a show, and they do it for entertainment. I'm talking about people like chris crocker.)
I like the kinda gay guys who you can totally tell they're gay, but they still identify themselves as men.

Who just got banned

After living in a few different countries you begin to realize that stupidity and backwards-ness are not unique to any particular country, ethnicity or religion.

And threads like this one don't do diddly to make any sense of hate crimes.

But such a thread, as this does enable us to place in perspective, the thought that human hatred is peculiar to the backward countries.

I have travelled to Turkey for both work and leisure purposes, on several occasions. Marmaris, Smyrni (Izmir) and Constantinople (Istanbul).

In the inner less developed regions of Turkey we may expect rather primitive reactions to apparent unorthodox sexual behaviour.

On the Aegean coast and the major cities, such reactions are rare.

Turkish officialdom encourages a positive and friendly attitude to foreigners, in order to develop the tourist industry and also create a better relationship for trade and industry purposes

As someone who has been going to Turkey on holiday over a ten year period and as someone who on October 13th will be moving there to live full time, i'm absolutely outraged by certain ignorant wankers on this site. Turkish people, and my Turkish family are nothing but kind, loving and open minded towards everyone they meet. Sure, there are bad apples in Turkish society but there are bad apples in every society that ever existed. To say that Turkey is THE place to get shot if you're gay is not only an inaccurate statement (judging by the article which states this is the FIRST ever case of a gay honour killing in Turkey) it's also, I believe racially motivated in yet ANOTHER anti-Islamic thread.

Oh and i've travelled to Kos and it's absosultely nothing like Turkey. Apart from the sun always shining that is, the people are vastly differant to the point where they don't actually like each other.

There is a gay community in and around the Bodrum penninsula (where i'm moving to) but as i'm aware no actual gay bars (which isn't a bad thing). Turkish men like having sex with other men. It's a cultural thing.

There's a saying in Turkey that women are for marriage and men are for fun ;-) it's all very "hush hush" though so discretion is a must!

There is even two pre op transexuals who live near by in Turkey who get along fine with everyone in the community and are widely accepted as "just those loud lady boys with fake boobs".

Say about the US what you will, but I have great difficulty believing that USA government officials encourage this sort of thing. I'm not so sure about the situation in Turkey.

Oh, really?

In 1998, a black man in Texas was murdered by a group of white men who chained him to the back of their truck and drug him down a country road for 3 miles. In 2000, the Texas Legislature attempted to pass hate crimes legislation named in honor of Mr Byrd. Then Gov George W Bush said that such legislation was unnecessary as there was no need for tougher laws.

The law was eventually signed in 2001 by Gov Bush's replacement (as Mr Bush was now president) however in the final version of the bill, the legislature was unable to name specific groups that might be subject to hate crimes because of opposition to including gay men and lesbians as a "special group".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Byrd
On June 7, 1998, Byrd, 49, accepted a ride from three drunk men named Shawn Allen Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer, and John William King. He had already known one of them. Instead of taking him home, the three men beat Byrd behind a convenience store, chained him by the ankles to their pickup truck, stripped the man naked, and dragged him for three miles. Although Lawrence Russell Brewer claimed that Byrd's throat had been slashed before he was dragged, forensic evidence suggests that Byrd had been attempting to keep his head up, and an autopsy suggested that Byrd was alive for much of the dragging and died after his right arm and head were severed when his body hit a culvert. His body had caught a sewage drain on the side of the road resulting in Byrd's decapitation.

King, Berry, and Brewer dumped their victim's mutilated remains in the town's black cemetery, and then went to a barbecue.
