The deaths and injuries are still being counted, but this is incredible footage of a geological event creating a new fault...the earth ripping itself open.

The biggest "fault" in Turkey is the failure to enforce building standards, meaning that even buildings completed in the last few years collapsed in the earthquake. The BBC News article below describes the payment of "construction amnesties", which sound to me like legalised bribes, allowing builders to sidestep the "required" building standards. This is a scandal which may cost President Erdoğan the next election.
