I am no tech troglodyte. But there are levels of tech I just don't need or care for.

We only ditched the land line to the farm when it shorted out about a year and a half ago....and for years all I had was the Telus flip phone basic program. I still don't have data or any other shit on our teeny weeny little 'phone' and only pay about 25 bucks a month for the privilege.

I love telling clients and other stakeholders in my professional life that I don't receive calls...don't transmit data...just don't. Do anything. But make outgoing calls.

I love telling clients and others not to call me between 5 pm and 7 am because I ignore my line. ( I also refuse to look at business email between 5pm and 7am on any day)

Or not to call because I am in Bumfuckistan, Ontariostan and won't get the signal.

How do you keep the balance? Keeping friends and family and clients from thinking they have a right to access your attention 24/7?

To the point of the title. I had to look up on-line how to turn off the flashlight on my phone because I had never used it before and apparently hit one of the keys accidentally?

Im never too accessible, I turn my phone off at will and use facebook messenger to do most communicating including family. It works because I only add actual acquaintances (I get dizzy when I see people who have 14,752 friends).

Havent had a direct phone line in years, use a text/call app for anyone who cant reach me on messenger. This year I abandoned legit data service, use wifi in public and ISP at home. Its addictive not being on the grid and I love the control of people, even my mom who is a chatterbox, only being able to reach me on my terms.

I still have flashbacks of yesteryear, being on the phone listening to someone breathe cuz we have nothing to talk about but pushover-me thought hanging up prematurely was rude.

*only exception to adding strangers on facebook is Ive added our dear sweet Frank and that wretched smarmy hoe Lexington.

I have always DESPISED the telephone since I had my first dial up and first apartment.

I intensely dislike talking on the phone and I intensely dislike being interrupted from whatever I am doing to answer the phone (exceptions for emergencies). My friends all know this so they know what to expect. A good phone call for me is less than a minute.

I DO NOT TEXT - give or receive. I think it is an obnoxious and invasive interruption and I don't want to engage in it.

I really hate it when my cell phone starts talking to me. WTF? I yell at it

Twitter and instagram - UGH saw each site once - that was enough.

I am blunt about it so all my friends know this about me.

The only exception I think is when I haven't talked to someone in years then I don't mind a long conversation.

$25 and all you get is a very basic phone??
I have a mid range smart phone plus unlimited texts and talk time and 2 Gb of data for $17/month and I don't think that is particularly great value

We have a home phone line and often don't answer the phone until they start to leave a message that we want to respond to. We have added a blocker machine to it and are starting to block numbers that we identify as spam. I also have an old flip phone and normally leave it off except the rare times I am using it or expecting a call that can't be received on our home phone. I do not have a smart phone.

Unfortunately, I do get way too many emails in my inbox of the computer.

Y'all realize you're going go have to get a new 4G phone because 3G is going to be phased out in 3 months. Anyways like Rickrock we screen phone calls as well! I have a smartphone but have no data plan. I do not shop or bank or do any of that shit online! We still have a landline because if there is a power outage VOIP won't work also you can sometimes pick up cell calls on walkie talkies and/or police scanners. I also pay per minute on my phone only $.10 a minute .20 a text I only refill my account every 3 months Its only $120 ish for my phone per year.

I like my iphone i have the gps on it and i can play music in the car and also if need to quickly price things at the store.


I like social media i learn from it and catch up old friends or make new ones or sometimes bootycalls! Facebook as annoying as that app can be theres so many useful resources on there.


Texting you can text me anytime you want, if i don't want to be bother i won't text back until i am ready to be bothered. Sometimes i put on the do not disturb feature. I do think it's annoying when people think you're available to them at all times of the day.

I have my phone set to only ring for my contacts. At 8pm it goes into do not disturb mode until 8am. My mom, my kid, and her mother are the only ones that will ring thru. My work knows not to bother me unless it’s an emergency because I charge them an hour work per phone call

I don’t have a home phone or home Internet. Everything goes thru my mobile. I only pay $48 a month with limitless-no throttling data

Our office internet is $100 per month, home is $60, and as I mentioned, about $28 per month for unlimited phone but no text or data. I make about 10 calls per month on that phone.Our satellite is about $150 per month now with various specialty channels.

I am just about ready to give up land lines for the office...we now might get 8 to 10 calls per day....everything is by email now.

That's why I've abandoned having an active phone line, most communication is digital now. At one point I was a huge texter an email her but I began to worry about carpal tunnel until voice-to-text became a thing. Outside of jub my fingers don't really hit the keyboard. after I turn my phone on everything is done by Voice.

I'll admit I do like my Tech stuff. I'm an elder guy but I like techy things. Large TV screens, smart bulbs and power plugs and speakers and video doorbells. Outside facing camera to watch the neighbors...I mean my yard and street. I want good Wifi in the house and yard. I was the first person of anyone I knew to buy a VCR and a computer (ever heard of Radio Shack Tandy computers)?

Back to the topic of phones. I still have a landline phone. It is the same number I've had for over 30 years so anyone who knows me well has this number. I like having a landline phone immediately available in the basement, on the main floor, and in the bedroom. No need to make sure i carry my cell phone around with me all day long. I do not buy the latest and greatest cell phone that can easily cost $1,000 to $1,800 these days. My phone I bought this year was $230 and with it I bought a 12 month pre-paid plan for $199 that includes unlimited calls and texts and 12gb of Data for the year. That is not a whole lot of data, but I have Wifi about everywhere I go to visit or eat.

But I don't get many calls or texts to either phone. Maybe 1 a day. I do silence my cell phone while sleeping so I'm not bothered with any notifications.

I bought a nice used sedan two weeks ago, and have cleaned up my Honda and listed it to sell. It's in great shape, and gets great mileage, and only has 51k miles on it, so should sell quick in the tight used market.

In the ad, I stated I would gladly take calls, but won't text about it.

Immediately got three texts from either illiterate shoppers, trolls, or bots, but deleted them all.

Got another yesterday.

Meanwhile a college kid is scheduled to look at it and is enthused. Life is just too short to put up with morons trying to ask questions at a snail's pace via text or lowball offers, sight unseen.

It's a deal over $10k, so is either worth a call, or no dice.
