"Twilight," the vampire romance that has spurred feverish anticipation among female moviegoers, took a bigger-than-expected $70.55 million bite out of the weekend box office in North America , according to studio estimates issued Sunday.

The teen smash crushed the competition, including "Bolt," a Walt Disney Co. canine cartoon that made its debut at No. 3 with a disappointing $27 million.

"Twilight's" showing was the best opening weekend for a movie since " The Dark Knight " launched with a record $158 million in July.

This isnt surprising it was advertised like crazy and there was so much hype about it. Everyone who has seen it said it was truly awful though.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to be all that great. That said, it wasn't quite as bad as I had feared. The book was better, but I kind of enjoyed the movie as well. I hope they go on to do the other books in the series. Maybe they can put a little more effort into the sequels.

They're already in works making the sequel to this film. It will be based on the 2nd book. Eh, the movie was just missing something....can't really put my finger on it.

^^Never doubt the purchasing power of the Miley Cyrus generation.

hmm...maybe blood...sex...mystery...dramatic tension? You know. Vampire stuff.

Good God this movie was awful. Terrible acting, terrible directing, terrible cinematography...the list goes on. I really loved the books so I was so disappointed in it. Most of the movie was incredibly boring, with a few parts that were so dumb they were funny...I definetly wouldn't recommend seeing this movie unless you're drunk

I agree. Having never read these books or heard of the series until a couple of months ago, I hope a sequel will focus more on the family as a whole, not just Edward?

And maybe a bigger budget will help with the special effects or something. Cuz I could barely tell that he would only get "shiny" in sunlight

The baseball scenes were the best in the movie...which isn't saying much at all. But I mean, come on they had a hot vampire family and barely focused on them...

Less townspeople & more vamp family in the future would be my suggestion. But again I'd hardly call myself a fan.

It was pretty obvious that even the non-special FX stuff (like the flashback scenes when the native American friend was telling the legend) suffered from a small budget.

I enjoyed it...but I mean you really do have to take into consideration that they were a)adapting a 500+ page book into a 2 hour movie and b)they were working on a fairly small budget....I think for what they were working with they did a pretty good job...and now that this movie is a big success that only means they have more money to work with for "New Moon" which is great ...cause I actually enjoyed "New Moon" a lot more then "Twilight" so I can't wait for that movie

but yeah....Kristen Stewart was horrible in this movie...I thought everyone else was pretty good

There is nothing I hate more than Twilight at this moment. I hate it, and I hate teenaged girls for making it popular. This is a Fabio smut story for little kids.

it was bad i ninjavideo'd it, but in the picture you linked.... can you see the cable they're using for their 'flight?' i think ican see it looks like it's in the gap between their two heads

Blood and Sex? So you like the cliche Vampires?

I totally understand people not liking the book, but I think people are being way too critical considering the audience it is for, it's for a teenage audience. It's either that you enjoy it and accept it for that, or you don't. But don't trash the book because of the age group it's for.

Harry Potter would be considered for a certain age group as well and people of all ages love that too.

Eroticism and blood are essential elements of the vampire archetype. You take those out and you have...well something else. I'm not saying Twilight should be a pornographic gore-fest. But the author, because of her admitted cluelessness about vampire lore, has taken out so many traditional elements like the weaknesses and limitations vampires have (they walk around in sunlight and get sparkly for heaven sakes) that these latterday bloodsuckers seem more like emo teenbeat superheroes than vampires.

The other problem is the setting. Is it really plausible to have a century year old vampire attend high-school and fall in love with a 16yr old girl? I know females emotionally mature faster than guys do, but that's still quite a gap. What on earth could they have to talk about? Why would his family be so delighted that he brought a girl home for dinner unless she was the main course? I'm sorry. More power to the people who love the movie, but it's just sounds like an after school special in pancake makeup to me.

First, it just sounds like you don't like she took on her own ideas for Vampires. I am not big on Vampires at all because of cliche every ten thousand movies are about them. I liked that she took a different turn about them, whether you like that or not. Also considering that she does have the typical Vampires in the story who fit the cliche.

It's fiction, so yes it is plausible. And for her to make it plausible in her fictional story, was only to make it believable, to me she did. You obviously haven't read the book to realize why he does do these things, taking them to meet the family, etc. You're completely judging the book/movie without even reading it at all. Not liking it is one thing, but completely judging it without reading it or giving it a chance is another.

See right there's the difference between us. You're "not big on vampires" but I quite like them and have a lot more respect for the genre. I'm all for innovation or new twists on the vampire mythos (and there are plenty of writers who have done that to good effect), but for me the premise of Twilight is neither compelling nor grounded enough to draw me in. But hey like I said: more power to you if you like it. To each their own. The prospect of vampires playing baseball (in broad daylight no less) is just not something that intrigues me.

While I don't care to see this move or read the books ever, I'm happy for Stephanie Meyer's success and that her fans have been able to see one of their favorite books adapted to film in a way that pleases them. :)
