Two Airliners connect at Sea-Tac Airport

Sorry I am using this thread for plane crashes in general. Her is another one. A plane flipped upside down.

I'm truly stunned by this accident. Even gusting winds shouldn't upset commercial aircraft landings.
Now I give pause everytime I start my computer. What's next?

I was only stunned by the absence of fatalities.

When we were landing a O'Hare a few years back, I remember the cross wind being very strong, and was quite suprised that the pilot had attempted landing in that near gale wind. We aborted the landing and went around for a second go.

The cabin was deathly quiet and the lady beside me with her granddaughter had her eyes closed and was clearly praying.

We set down on the next attempt, but it was VERY rough, and the plane touch three different one-wheel strikes before all gear was in contact. The cabin burst into applause.

I have no doubt that pilots often push the margin and risk catastrophe when winds are too strong, but they usually win. This one apparently didn't, unless it's upset is related to mechanical failure or pilot error.

The most dangerous fallout from the public perception that air travel is becoming unsafe, is that they will be more likely to take long road journeys instead of flying.
Driving is still far more risky than any airline, even the Russian ones.
In the aftermath to 9/11 people were nervous about flying so they drove more. The resulting increase in road accidents killed more people than the terrorists did.

Commercial aviation remains the safest form of transportation. Travel by automobile carries a much higher risk.
More details should be available later today. This is a textbook example of why passengers must be strapped in their seats during landing.

So I have seen video of how the plane flipped over. I am not smart enough to post it here, but it just seemed the plane wanted it's belly rubbed so it flipped over. Amazing really.

Air travel is inherently dangerous but it can be and been made safe. By draconian enforcement of rules. Strict alcohol/drug limits for crew. Strict, regular testing of the aircraft. Always obeying air traffic control. Cars could be as safe as planes if they were held to the same high standards but that will never happen. Instead, Mr More Moneythansense is determined to make planes as unsafe as cars.

Even worse. He wants to make them as unsafe as his cars.

This is very strange!

All I see is a hard landing, but the force of impact immediately tore the airplane apart.

Like I said. It just wants belly rubs.

Yeah. I got no idea why it would do that. Out of all the recent incidents this is the one I am most wanting to read the findings.

I read an article that questioned 3 pilots. They said they thought it could have happened because the plane came in too fast, one of the wheels buckled and weather conditions.

Two small aircraft collide at a Regional Airport near Tucson, Arizona.
Both planes were smaller fixed wing single engine aircraft, two people are dead following a midair collision.

It very much reminds me of the landing at O'Hare. Landing gear can only take so much abuse, and if an uneven strike is bad enough, the angle and force can absolutely fracture even the best design.

The question will be, was it the wind, the pilot, a hardware failure, or a combination.

The truth will come out eventualy after the accident investigation, or maybe not. Not if the accident investigation experts have lost their jobs in the interests of further efficiency improvements.

One of my aviation go-to guys is Jeff Ostroff. His take on the Delta Toronto crash is interesting.

"When you think about it, anyway, every landing of a plane is really a crash landing."

No, that's not the meaning of "crash landing", but he is probably right about pilot error and the plane nailing the runway so hard that it collapsed the landing gear and broke off the right wing, causing the rollover.

It is still possible that mechanical failure was at fault and not the pilot, but unlikely. We won't know until we know.

Thanks for that, Ed. It helps explain why the plane rolled, which I couldn't figure out at first. They were also fortunate that the wing ripped off and was left behind before it's fuel burst into flames.

You are welcome! The press report said the runway was dry, but the new video shows snow all over the runway and that may have suppressed fire as well.
