I just moved my computer home with my partners computer. He has one phone line and is using dsl for his. My computer will only get online by using dsl. What I know about computer you can fit under my fingernails. I chew the fingernails.

how do I connect my computer to the other one so each can be used at the same time

The best way to do this would be by using a router, this will do the whole job of connecting to the internet and then all you will need to do is connect both computers to the router either by network cable or with wireless.

The other method would be to connect the computers together with a crossover cable and share the internet connection from the internet connected computer (A) to the other computer (B). The problem with this method is that computer A would need to be turned on for computer B to be access the internet.

If you do not currently have a router you may wish to contact your DSL provider. Many of them will provide you with free equipment upgrades if you ask. That would allow you to connect multiple computers to the same DSL modem either wired or wirelessly (assuming the router has a wireless AP).

Just looking on the US Amazon site and I can't seem to find a router that has a built in modem. Is it just me being stupid or does it work differently over there?

A router is what you need...

They're VERY affordable (15-20 bucks)...

HOWEVER...

IF you have ANY problems with the normally EASY install...

BRUSH UP on your INDIAN (as in India) accent...

GOOD LUCK...

computer A is on the phone line and has dsl and is located on 2nd floor
computer B is in the basement and has to be connected to a dsl

Your best bet is to update to a wireless network.
Just check with your DSL provider.
I got everything I needed from Verizon - modem, router, adapter, etc.
Both of my computers work fine and they are on different floors.

/\ if he's in the basement, there is likely the ground floor (often called 1st floor here) and then the second floor. so i think he will have a VERY hard time trying to go wireless. But...it might work, i just don't want to see him spend the money on a wireless stuff only to find out he's too far away for it to work.

i don't have DSL so i don't know exactly how it works. if DSL is on the phone lines, can't he just hook his PC up to a DSL modem and then into the phone line? or does DSL only work with one modem in the house?

wireless is pretty good 802.11 g which i have setup here and have had it setup from the bottom floor one end of the house to the top floor other end

unless there is some seriously thick concrete in the was wireless should cover a standard house
