Possibly for the same reason you let the fact that a character who is married to a woman but sleeping around with guys behind her back slide by without comment?

Two wrongs don't make a right. And from what the OP said it wasn't as if there were positive gay portrayals in the movie either, which is part of the problem.

The film is actually a play from the late 70's/early 80's. And that was more or less how gay people were treated.

There is film out there called "On The Down-low" that deals with black (possibly closeted) gay black men, who have extra martial affairs with other men.

Yeah when I first heard about the down-low subplot in For Colored Girls I had my reservations about it as well considering who's film it was and how he has a reputation of portraying pretty much every group in a stereotypical, heavy-handed manner. After seeing it, I thought Tyler presented the issue as fairly as he could. Most guys who are in that situation don't believe that they're gay so I can pretty much imagine the conversation at the end between Janet's character and her closet cased husband as being authentic. Given their relationship, that conversation would have played out irl with that same language. Her lashing out at him b/c he betrayed her and endangered her health and him lashing back, denying the possibility that he's gay even though he engages in sex with men.

As much as Tyler does love to pander to the religious black female demographic, I just didn't see that particular scene as propaganda against homosexuality. If anything, the way that scene was staged, it seemed like the audience was supposed to disapprove of him b/c he refuses to accept the fact that he is indeed gay.

Yes! I also did not feel as if this was in any way homophobic. What that man did, and being on the down low, is real. This happens in real life. Everyday. I mean, not just looking at black men, but look at all the men out there who consistently have feelings for or engage in sexual activity with other men...but still claim to be 100% heterosexual and even get married (and sometimes have kids). And I've read that a lot of the men in escorting/prostitution, don't they say that so many of the men they service go home to gf/wives/etc...
so it's real.

To the op, I don't think there was anything homophobic there. Janet's character, Joanna, confronted her husband, I believe there was a sense that it wasn't about him being 'gay', 'bi' whatever...and she asked him. It was about him cheating and lying, period. And then endangering her health.
And not to necessarily come to Janet's defense, if it really was not done right to begin with, I doubt she would really take a role that sent that kind of message considering the kind of person she is.

ps. the play came out in the 70s, '75 I believe. I can't remember if this 'down-low' story is actually in the original play or not. The film is quite a bit different from the source material.

I think when people say, "Tyler perry is gay!" they don't really mean he sucks dick...
They mean he just sucks in general.

does that make any sense?

^Oh no...make no mistake ... there are PLENTY of people who say that and are referencing the man's sexuality. Regardless of what Perry actually is, there are tons of folks that don't believe he's straight.

Ps. As "For Colored Girls", while it has a few TP moments, it really is not a "Tyler Perry" film. Could it have been slightly better in terms of direction, production...sure. But overall it's a pretty damn good film that deserves more attention that it's getting. The performances by the ensemble of ladies are INCREDIBLE in this film. Quite a few of them deserve major recognition for this (though I doubt they'll get it). And the work is really Ntozake Shange's work. Yes, he did write the script, & there are just a few moments where that Tyler Perry style comes in (that I'm not really fan of)....but this film is so much more than that. I really suggest seeing it just once.

I like Tyler Perry movies they are good and realistic But Tyler does come off as gay sometimes
