U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan declares her support for gay marriage; others follow suit

An analysis of the possible next Republicans to support same-sex marriage:

I forgot to mention but Landrieu has indicated that she's personally supportive, so it may not be a huge step for her.

Thank you, scream4ever, for also posting this!

It's interesting, indeed, and this may change the dynamics for Senate Republicans as well. Maine's Susan Collins — up for re-election in 2014 — is the one who intrigues me most because of incumbency and whether she'd have a bitch of a time coming out for support in the midst of a primary season. It's early still; but she'd be okay, for sure, if the "tea party" (and I quote that because it's a Koch brothers' manufactured movement) shifts in the direction of supporting marriage equality.

;)

Separate Note: I tuned in Stephanie Miller's program, simulcast on Current TV, and today it was reported that Scott Brown — unseated in last year's U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts by the state's senior U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren — may move to New Hampshire and challenge that state's senior U.S. senator, Jeanne Shaheen, for the 2014 general election. I'd say, if he were to do that, he'd need a Republican wave election to unseat her.

Not to mention she hails from a Jim Crow state, one of the worst.

It is a joke. She would have been better on saying nothing at all. She'll still get support though, because it will be her or someone who is defiantely anti-gay for the Republican side.

Mark Pryor indicates he's undecided on the issue:

While not an endorsement, this can still be considered movement nonetheless. As I said, I predict Manchin will reiterate his opposition and Johnson will come out in favor.

As far as Susan Collins, the Tea Party is greatly fractured in Maine, having lost both chambers of the state legislature and Lepage being one of the most unpopular governors in the country. I really think she doesn't have much to worry about in regards to coming out in support.

I get why people want these last holdouts to come to our side but you have to understand how deeply homophobic the places they represent are.
Backing gay marriage IS a losing issue in these states, especially Arkansas, which as Jockboy87 pointed out,it one of the most homophobic places in NOrth America.
Some stay and fight the good fight but for the most part, any LGBT people I know that lived in Arkansas got out of there as fast as they could.

Not to mention David Vitter is a hypocrite. He can cheat on his wife and sleep with many of women as possible but if gays and lesbians get married, that's just wrong.
But is just how it is down there. Homosexuality is considered worse then adultery, murder, rape etc to many people down there.

South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson says he now
supports gay marriage after ‘lengthy consideration’

By Associated Press

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota [U.S.] Sen. Tim Johnson, who announced his retirement last month, has reversed his position on gay marriage, saying Monday [04.08.2013] that he supports the legalization of same-sex unions.

“After lengthy consideration, my views have evolved sufficiently to support marriage equality legislation,” Johnson said in a written statement. “This position doesn’t require any religious denomination to alter any of its tenets; it simply forbids government from discrimination regarding who can marry whom.”

^^^

I predict he'll be the last one for at least a little while, until Collins, Murkowski, or another Republican comes out in favor (or Landrieu, Pryor, or Manchin do an about-face on the issue).

Lisa Murkowski is third Republican senator
to support same-sex marriage

As supreme court weighs marriage equality,
Alaska senator joins Mark Kirk and Rob Portman as Republicans in favour

A third sitting Republican senator has backed gay marriage as the US waits for the Supreme Court to reach a decision on two pivotal cases regarding the constitutionality same-sex marriage.

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said on Wednesday [June 19] that she supported marriage equality and "supports the government getting out of the way to let that happen."

In her Wednesday statement, she cited a female couple who had adopted four children but did not have the same rights as other families.

^^^That makes 54 now! It'll be interesting to see who else may come forward after the Supreme Court hands down the rulings...

I'm surprised Lisa Murkowski didn't come out for marriage equality sooner. Keep in mind despite the fact she is pretty much Republican all the way,she is considered a rino because she won't kiss the butt of the far right right. 2010 was not the first time she faced a primary threat and it won't be the last.
