Ubuntu 7.04 is now available.

God I have a thousand questions about this program. I wanna read up on it more. Does anyone have a website that explains in detail Unbuntu? And does this Unbuntu come with beryl? To tell the truth I didn't really read the first post. I read the posts after it. Maybe that has all the info I need.

Well I can't burn it right now. I need to get blank CD's with more space on it. Stupid Fujifilm 700MB! lol

Well I tried to burn it with NTI and it said it wasnt possible. I went to the properties to compress it(i hope that wasnt a bad thing to do) and it said that it was 699 MB which I guess is too close to the capacity of the CD, and on NTI, it says the blank CD is 701.1 MB which should be just enough, but apparantly it isnt.

Also thank you so much T-Rexx for all your help. I truely am excited to try out Linux, but soo many obstacles.

Thanks for typing all that out!;)

one more question how do you burn a iso file on a disk. im somewhat clueless when it comes to computers :(:help:

if you can tell us which CD/DVD burning software you use, I can probably find it and install it myself and then give you step by step instructions. I have Nero 7, it's what came with my CD/DVD drive. A lot of folks might have Nero or maybe Roxio easy CD creator.

I actually ordered the CD straight from the website. They offered to ship it for free and I signed up. Sadly it takes about 4 to 6 weeks so i'll just be buying a higher capacity blank disk.

I'm not sure what your problem could be with writing the image to 700 MB discs in Windows.

Ubuntu reports the 7.04 image size as being 697.9 MB and I can write it to a 700 MB disc with no problem. As suggested above, you can always use a blank DVD instead if all else fails.

...I can't tell you how many times I've done that, myself - made some slight error with a burn and ruined a disk, but then returned it to my stack of blanks because it looked like there was nothing on it and it might still be good)....

oh yeah, crap i've done that sooo many times. in fact did it again just the other day. grabed a CD that windows said was blank, nero said it was blank, but turns out it wasn't and it would have ruined it had it not been a CD+RW disc. i do that all the damn time. don't know why i can't "learn my leason."

/\ this is so true. shame on us [-X

at least we use linux :gogirl:

although i still can't get mkbootdev to work in knoppix. i'm just going to wait till 5.2.1 comes out, surely it will come out this week!

Okay. I went to five stores this evening, and finally found one that had Fujifilm brand 700 MB blank CD-R disks (48x). (The things I don't do for you guys).

I put the ubuntu 7.04 iso file (32 bit/i86/desktop/gnome) I had downloaded on an old Windows 2K computer.

Linux reports the size of that iso file as 697.9 MB

Windows reports the size of that same iso file as 714.646 MB (714,646 KB)

I burned the iso file to a Fujifilm 700 MB blank CD-R disk on the Windows 2K machine with the free CD/DVD burning program Burn4Free. The burn worked flawlessly multiple times, and the disks created were all bootable/installable.

Test machine specs:

Windows 2000 SP4
Burn4Free 2.0.0.0
Four Yamaha SCSI CD-R/W drives (16x 10x 40x)
Adaptec AIC-7850 PCI SCSI controller
Intel Celeron 2.20 Ghz
S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR
512 MB RAM
75 GB IDE hard drive

The problem is not your Fujifilm disks, BlackWolf. I suspect there may be something wrong with the iso file you downloaded, or the disks you think are blank may not actually be blank (I can't tell you how many times I've done that, myself - made some slight error with a burn and ruined a disk, but then returned it to my stack of blanks because it looked like there was nothing on it and it might still be good).

Download the iso file again, this time from bigdog83.
Download and install Burn4Free.
Burn the new iso to a blank 700 MB CD-R as a bootable disk with Burn4Free (Click Drive>Burn ISO. Then direct the wizard to the location of the ubuntu 7.04 iso file on your hard drive). Let it burn.

Enjoy.
God thank you so much! I currently use NTI and it said the size was very big. I will def be redownloading it and using Burn4Free.

Ummmmm, I feel so stupid. So i burned ubuntu to my blank disk. and i restarted my computer, nothing happened? then i went to my comp and clicked on the ubuntu disk, and i dont know what to do. i have never realized how little i know of computers until now.

You need to make sure that your computer is configured to boot from the cdrom first. You can do this by entering the setup options when your computer first starts to boot. Usually that involves pressing the Delete or F1 key when it prompts you to. The options vary depending on your computer. Once you have set the computer to boot from the cdrom first, you can save the setting and and reboot. Ubuntu should then run off the CD.

lol nvm, i figured it out. i pushed F when signing back on and went to CDROM and lone behold, it was there. lol

this program is quite interesting. very orange, and totally foreign but i will get the hang of it. i hope. if i like it.

i find it funny that i use so many of the programs that ubuntu comes with. like openoffice and GAIM

Glad you got it working... Just play around with it and remember that it will run slower off of the Live CD than it will once you install it on your computer.

Also don't get too caught up on the orange (sadly, a lot of people do that). You can change the look, and colors to make it look however you want.

yeah i changed the background to something i like. and i did notice it is a little slow, but i can understand why. very cool OS so far.

The slowness is, of course, because it's running from the CD-ROM drive. CD-ROM drives operate only a small fraction as fast as hard drives do. Also, since you can't write to a CD-ROM, the OS can't use a swap file on the drive to speed things up.

Once installed to a hard drive, ubuntu is reasonably fast.

(BTW, the "orange"/brown earth tone themes are a sort of ubuntu "trademark").
lol yeah, thats the conclusion i came to to. my whole desk had a soft rumble as my CPU was reading the disk. i am definately gonna install linux on my computer, but i actually want to try some of the other linux OS's. i am curious how the other ones work.

There are many other good Linux distributions. The top 10 distributions at http://distrowatch.com/ would be a good place to start if you are interested in looking at others.

The main advantage with ubuntu is its ease of use and it's large support community. That's not always the case other, less adopted distributions.

Ubuntu also comes in several different flavors if you don't like regular ubuntu. I would try those as well if you are interested in trying something different.

Ubuntu - Gnome desktop http://www.ubuntu.com/

Kubuntu - KDE desktop (feels more like windows that regular ubuntu) http://www.kubuntu.org/

Xubuntu - A lighter version of ubuntu (good for older computers) http://www.xubuntu.org/

Edubuntu - Aimed at classroom use for young children. http://www.edubuntu.org/
