I was wondering if any of u guys know how the liveCD for the ubuntu works? I was browsing around the net the other day and i went on the site for ubuntu where i saw that they were distributing free CDs of it, but i want to first find out if i have to partition my harddrive for ubuntu since im running windows or does it run straight from the cd? How do you guys like ubuntu by the way?

T-rex is right, when you run it "live" from the CD it will do absolutely nothing to your computer or your windows installation. I believe I'm safe in saying all the "live" linux versions do that. My favorite is knoppix however. I think ubuntu is likely to do what most people need it to do without having to install most any other software, aside from maybe codecs or something to play video or audio.
I agree with T-rex again when he says "it rocks." the other benefit is that you get to see if it will work right and identify all your stuff just by running it live. Again though keep in mind all the linux live CDs will run slower than they would if they were installed.

I've been using Ubuntu since the 7.04 ("Feisty Fawn") release, and I love it!
I have a dual-boot with Win XP, but I hardly ever use XP anymore at all.

you can check out screen shots of most of the Linux versions by going to http://distrowatch.com/ and then picking the distribution (or version of linux like ubuntu, knoppix, pclinuxos, etc).
for example, if you pick ubuntu from the page i just gave a link to (look to the far right under rankings, ubuntu is #1 at the moment) you'll get here:http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntu
there is a link there to "screenshots" and says TCS, which takes you here: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/screenshots/index.php?os=ubuntu

you can click on any of the pictures on the left and they will display larger in the center.
near the bottom, you'll see a sliding row of all the other version of linux in alphabetical order.
T-rex is right about the winmodem thing. you most likely have a winmodem these days, unless you have an external modem. so that will be problematic i think for you and the internet.
if you have local book store like barnes and nobel or waldenbooks or something you may be able to find a "free" cd with one of the Linux magazines. they include different version of linux each month, but you might be able to find one with ubuntu in it.

sorry forgot to answer this question. window's programs wont install into linux without some effort, and it's Ify at best. You have to use the "WINE" program in linux to install them and get them to work. however, if you are just talking about word/excel etc, then you should know that ubuntu uses openoffice which is free and comes installed already setup when you run ubuntu. it will open and allow you to use all your MS office documents, whether they are word, excel, or power point. you can save them as word documents and they are still usable to people who have MS office. so what i'm saying is i don't think you need to word.
now if you have other programs like photoshop or something that's also going to be tuff. but let me suggest you list out the programs you use and there is almost surely a linux alternative that will work for you. in most cases i think.

This is how my current ubuntu 7.04 desktop looks, though this isn't the default. It's very easy to set it up to look the way you want.
Also there is Windows installer called Wubi

You are right people, i do have a winmodem, it died on me close to christmas last year and now im just using my phone to access these forums. Thats why my screen name is cellular.
Since my modem died, i dont think this should affect me when i get linux. Thanks for all your advice guys, you have been really helpful and quick in response!

try installing ubuntu first, then vista
i think you'll be in for an unpleasant surprise when you see just how well vista plays with the other children.

By the way for those interested in Wubi, it only works with Windows 98 through Windows XP. Wubi developers are working on getting it to work with Vista as soon as possible. Predictably, and in spite of what noelie says, Microsoft has made it unnecessarily difficult for Vista users to dual boot another OS.
Well here in south africa, we dont have a walmart and are definitely less technologically advance than the states. A broadband connection here cost around R500 A MONTH, while other places in the world has broadband for like R500 a year. If you dont believe me, log on to www.hellkom.co.za . It is that expensive as our only telecommunications national operator, telkom, has monopolized the market. Getting wireless gprs and edge is the cheaper alternative to broadband or even dailup, so once again, im jealous of all you with broadband.
EasyBCD and Vista Boot Pro aren't non microsoft programs and don't automatically come with vista. atleast grub comes with any linux distribution automatically.
which means if you want vista to dual boot, you have to work force it to whereas linux automatically does it.
life sucks without broadband. the town i grew up in didn't have it as an option; so trust me, i know how you feel.
by the way: you can buy linux cds from places like distrowatch. each one costs about $5 (american) and they can ship it to anywhere you want; but like T-Rexx said; i would wait until Lin-modems is fully able to replace the whole win-modem problem.
