I've never watched the show, but I know it was popular:

‘Ugly Betty’ actor arrested

By Greg David

Michael L. Brea in custody after mother decapitated

Horrible news out of New York City, where actor Michael L. Brea is in custody after his mother was found murdered.

TVGuide.com and NYC television station WPIX report Brea, who has appeared in episodes of Ugly Betty, as well as the feature film Step Up 3D and commercials by Coke, was labelled a person of interest in the investigation on Tuesday.

New York authorities were called to the actor’s Brooklyn apartment after screams were heard by neighbours early Tuesday morning. Yannick Brea, 55, was found with multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead on arrival at 2:20 a.m., police spokesman Det. Martin Speechley described. Brea reportedly decapitated his mother and stabbed her repeatedly with a Samurai sword.

I don't recognize him from the show. I did a search and could only find that he appeared in Ugly Betty 1 episode with credit of "patron." Seems odd that he's linked to the show if that's all he's done...sad that that's his claim to fame...lol.

still...it's a very brutal murder.

I did a search and could only find that he appeared in Ugly Betty 1 episode with credit of "patron."

I didn't know him, either. I saw 'episodes' in the report and thought he might have been a recurring character or something.

Doesn't make his mother's death any less gruesome, though, does it? I guess even 'patrons' can go off the deep end.

Not exactly a UB star, but gruesome nonetheless. My condolences to the victim's family and friends.

I only watched the show (on the web) toward the latter part of its run, so if he appeared toward its beginning, I probably missed him.

Admittedly, I only did a glancing search, but I didn't find anything which specified what role he played on the show. The closest thing I saw suggested only that he'd had a bit part, but I don't know how factual that is. Some of the stories seem to suggest that he was in the grip of some kind of "religious mania"; that he was chasing his mother through the house screaming Biblical quotations, and calling on her to "Repent". How factual that may be, I also don't really know, as most of those references seemed to be at second or third hand.

I'll never understand what drives people to do these things. Especially so close to the holidays. Sad.

I always hate when they do this to stories. Remember that guy that killed those people on the boat or something and the headline was that he was on Power Rangers, but in reality he was like an extra.

Why is it that everything gruesome has to happen just before Thanksgiving and Christmas? Reminds me of the family who were killed in a fire by some psycho dressed a santa. Crazy world we live in =/

To call him a "star" of Ugly Betty is a preposterous stretch... I watched almost the entire series and I don't recognize him from that one picture. I think he had a bit part in one episode, that's it.

Exactly. All they saw was an actor and then went through his CV and found a hit show that he appeared as an extra in and deemed him to be a 'star' of Ugly Betty.

It's not unusual for someone whom's been on a show to be labeled a star of that show, even if they only appeared on one episode.
Stupid, but not the first time it's happened. Look up the name Skylar Deleon as well.
