UK empty supermarket shelves ...

 I hate to say...we are good....our butcher already has our name on a Tom.

About 24 pounds is the estimated finishing weight.

There’s a huge Lunchables shortage here in the US and chicken wings are impossible to find.

I read that turkeys are going to be scarce around thanksgiving and are going to be much more expensive because of the shortage.

The result of Brexit obviously. ;)

Just got a huge delivery from Asda/Walmart, had to give me ten substitutes from my order, so while the shop isn't empty some of the brand name stuff are missing.

I went to Asda yesterday and it was the same. Some brand stuff missing but plenty of alternatives

There was an article in the paper today about Costco setting quantity limits again on toilet paper and cleaners. This time its due to delivery issues.

I was surprised by many items out-of-stock yesterday at CVS pharmacy and ShopRite supermarket. Even my Wawa convenience store was out of gallons and half-gallons of milk.

But it probably isn't systemic. I'm probably just in store at the wrong times of the week.

Supermarket shelves?

NPR reported lines at petrol stations across the UK. Is any of this true?

Yeah. It is a temporary problem caused by panic buying.
There is no shortage of petrol, just not as many HGV drivers as they would like

Now that's the real problem.
A shortage of delivery drivers make availability of everything a matter of timing and luck.

"sorry mate . . . should've been here an hour ago".

There are some empty shelves & shortages of various random things here. Part of the problem (as others have mentioned) is not enough truck drivers... but another big issue is not enough warehouse workers, if there aren't people to process the orders of products going from warehouse onto truck, so that truck can then take them to stores it doesn't do much good to have the trucks even come to the warehouse.

Exactly. Once all the idiots are driving round with full rather than half-full tanks, things will return to normal. Unlike the panic buying at supermarkets at the start of the pandemic, people can't buy more fuel than their tank will hold.

I heard on the radio this morning that what panicked these idiots was news that 20 filling stations across the UK had run out of fuel because of delivery issues. It was a non-issue really which just blew up out of all proportion to the reality.

I don't think it was even as many as 20

According to Karma,
I hope they have petrol shortage like Venezuela so they know the pain and suffering caused by sanctions.

If you read the story, you'd know why the shortage of lorry drivers, and COVID have created this situation.

Not covid. Brexit. That is why there is no shortage in Northern Ireland: it is still in the EU's Single Market, thanks to Boris's Brexit deal.

But there are shortages in Northern Ireland.

I was in Sainsbury's here yesterday and, apart from a reduced number of some ready meals (which is no loss), the shelves were full. The Brexit deal has if anything made matters in Northern Ireland worse than in the rest of the UK, not better.

And why is there a shortage of drivers? Brexit.

Over 100,000 foreigners who "were stealing our jobs" went back to Eastern Europe after spending last christmas here:

Of course they don't want to work in the UK anymore!

That's part of it, but to put the whole problem down to Brexit is over-simplistic. There has been a huge issue with Covid and lorry drivers (and everyone else for that matter) being told to isolate by the track and trace system. Additionally, there's a generational problem recruiting younger drivers to replace those who retire. There are a number of reasons for that including low pay, the belief that the job involves a lot of overnight stays sleeping in the cab and also that lorry driving is just not seen as sexy enough for today's youngsters.
