UK Supreme Court Decision on Gender

The latest development is that the Labour Party has postponed its annual Women's Conference as a result of the Supreme Court ruling. According to the news report, previously "Labour had allowed people to self-identify as a woman, so trans women could attend the event and also take part in "positive action" measures such as all-women shortlists". It goes on to say a postponement was agreed upon "because the "only legally defensible alternative" would be to restrict attendance to biological women" and I'm guessing a large part of the party membership (those from Islington) would be unhappy with that.

The roll out effects of ignorance and intolerance. And there will be more of this in the UK as well. Thank God in Canada we just don't fucking seem to care.

This report includes contrasting views about trans women playing in women's football (soccer to Americans) following the Football Association's policy change which comes into effect today.

Billie Sky is a 28 year old trans woman who came out as transgender four years ago. She feels that she should be allowed to continue playing as a woman.

Georgie is a biological woman who takes the opposite view. She says "When I heard about the FA's decision, it gave me a deep sense of reassurance" and "I was happy that something was being done to protect the integrity of the women's game, a space that means so much to me and so many other women and girls". Interestingly, she describes how dissent has previously been stifled with threats of disciplinary action.

Wow. They found one athlete that was affected by the ban. Kind of like the grand total of 3 trans athletes the US college ban affected.

That really sums up the two sides of the argument. Rowling thinks that trans women are men "performing" as women. Boy George says "people can and always will be what they want to be", even, presumably, a llama.

Btw, does anyone understand the Churchill reference?

Southpark zeroed in on this fallacy years ago by having Kyle undergo a Negroplasty, the reverse of a Caucasioplasty, "just like Michael Jackson had."

In the same episode, his father had blowhole put in so he could be a dolphin.

The brutal description of the Negroplasty's violence is classic satire:

Btw, does anyone understand the Churchill reference?

My read is that the line in the Boy George post was a typo. There is no subject and predicate combination in that fragment. I believe he meant to say she is looking like Winston Churchill (facially scowling, frumpy) in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision on gender.

That is the only meaning that makes sense to me, considering the honorable Prime Minister never had a case before the Supreme Court to my knowledge or searching.

I think that makes the most sense. Churchill died over 40 years before the Supreme Court was carved out of the House of Lords.

To be honest, years ago when I tried to read one, I found the writing actually lazy and the work painfully derivative so never pushed my neice and nephew to read the series.

I also found as the movie series progressed that the the entire construct was fairly superficial but saved by marvellous actors and clever moviemaking.

I applaud this bookstore for turfing her apparently cynical and dishonest pandering books.

No Sir. It affects all women. If there's a TIM (trans-identified male) on one team, it affects all the women on all the teams they play against, and all the women in the TIM's own team, because there's a woman who lost out on a place because of that person. It even affects all the girls who could have started playing the sport but decided against it because they want to play in a women's league, without TIMs.

This is precisely what the entire SC decision was about: 'women only' in UK law means only biological women.

Indeed. After much blaming-of-women-for-everything, particularly the cancellation of this year's Labour Party Women's Conference, it was revealed that the number of men they would have needed to ask not to come was ... three.

That's right. Three men got to destroy a conference that around 1500 women would have attended.

For Women Scotland are going back to court to challenge the Scottish government's guidelines on the treatment of transgender pupils in schools and transgender people in prison. They claim the guidelines are inconsistent with the principles set out in the Supreme Court decision.

Detail:

For Women Scotland are going back to court to challenge the Scottish government's guidelines on the treatment of transgender pupils in schools and transgender people in prison.

No, they are going to back to court to challenge the Scottish government's guidelines on the treatment of GIRLS in schools and WOMEN in prison.

And rightly so. Men who rape and/or kill women shouldn't get to decide they are women, too, all of a sudden, from the moment they are convicted.
