To put this in context, Baltimore is 64% black, with a black mayor and, no doubt a largely black police force. I have not seen the race of the police officers involved, but you should not assume they are white.

It is my understanding that The Department of Justice is conducting an investigation into the death of Mr. Gray in police custody...I also understand the Baltimore PD is conducting its own inquiry...until such time as the results of those investigations are released to the public any speculation remains just that.

Police violence and abuse of power knows no racial boundaries. By far, the worst abuses are perpetrated against black citizens because we live in a country that, from its birth, was based on an ideology of white supremacy and slavery.

There was recently an incident in San Bernardino, California, where white police officers beat the shit out of a white guy after he laid down on the ground and put his hands behind his back. The county settled with the victim in record speed, agreeing to pay him quite a few hundred thousand dollars only about two weeks after the incident.

We have a crisis of policing in this country. We want to lock up everyone, have a ridiculous war on drugs, and ultimately too many police officers who are out of control.
