I can't seem to find a good codec that will let me play all types of videos on Windows Media Player 11 (Windows 7) - one example .flv videos

There are some codec packs out there - I have used the ones from http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html on XP, but IIRC I had problems with them on W7. However, that was years ago; perhaps they're working now. It's worth a shot.

My recommendation would be to download VLC player - it plays everything - even the VIDEO_TS folder if you copy it right off a DVD.

Get real player. They play .flv perfectly fine. Why you would want to use PoS software like WMP is beyond me.

Yep, VLC covers more possibilities than any other I've seen. And it's not bloatware like WMP either.

Installing codecs is only needed if you edit and create videos yourself.

Use VLC to watch them. I think Media Player Classic (not to confuse with the Windows product of the nearly same name) has built-in decoders too.

While I hate realplayer for streaming video. flv is the format it saves to...and plays that format back well.

Google k-lite mega codecs pack. It integrates into almost any media player (I use VLC for all of mine, but the codecs will run if you choose WMP or WMP Classic for play-back instead.

My vlc using k-lite plays flv, webm, mov, mp4, wmv, avi, mpg, divx, h264 and cellphone 3gpp, among others.

That's because Flash Video is the most common format used for streaming videos on websites.

k-lite mega codecs pack.
That's a thing of the past, along with Real Player.

VLC plays every codec except Real and Quicktime, I think. But for those two you install "Real Alternative" or "Quicktime Alternative" which is basically the codec without the additional players.

I am a big fan of VLC, also... it plays every type of video I've thrown at it, even some quite obscure formats.

As for audio, it's also really good, but I prefer Winamp for audio, since VLC can't play MIDI files...
