"Fourth, the current AIDS rate may reduce tolerance and also scare gay men into behaving
in safer ways. This potential effect, while plausible, runs in the opposite direction of the findings.
Fifth, tolerance may influence interstate migration patterns. In fact, increased tolerance may
encourage gay men to move into a state, which may raise the HIV rate. This selection effect also
runs counter to the results. Moreover, we find that the results are invariant to a control for the
interstate migration of gays."
"Fifth, tolerance may cause gay men to move into a state, which may impact the HIV rate.
Because HIV and the size of the gay population are positively correlated, all else equal, this
effect runs in the opposite direction of our findings. Even so, the effect of tolerance on HIV
remains whether or not we control for each state’s annual share of total entries in the Damron
travel guide, which is a proxy for migration of gays across states (see Tables 3-5)."
Even when one "reads," not all information seems to be assimilated. Interesting what a change of highlighting can do for comprehension.
