The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

[Chorus]
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

[Chorus]

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But now you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

[Chorus]

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Oh God, there's 100's of them....

The first one to spring to my mind was The Offspring's "Come Out and Play"

I used to dance around to this song like a clueless idiot:

"Your neverending spree of death and violence and hate is gonna tie your own rope..."

Who knew ?

Basically, most of Oasis's songs, Blur's songs, and Gorillaz's song...

Here's an interesting fact: The famous nursery rhyme "Ring around the Rosie" is believed to be about the Black plague.

---"Ring around the Rosie"--refers to a red mark, supposedly the first sign of the plague
---"A pocket full of posies"-- refers to sachets of herbs carried to ward off infection
---"Ashes, ashes" --either a reference to the cremation of plague victims or to the words said in the funeral Mass..."Ashes to ashes, dust to dust." Sometimes line three is rendered as "Atischoo, atischoo"--sneezing, another sign of infection.
---"We all fall down." -- The Plague was not selective in its victims; both rich and poor, young and old, succumbed.

LMAO! I could give you a hug for posting this song and understanding that it is a big FU and not sappy like most people think.

Adding to that Lily Allen has a lot of upbeat songs that are just downright depressing. This is my fav though...

LOL they censored weed and THC but not ass. Yes this song about her brother.

Then there's this...

The song is actually about Martin's brother flunking out of college and attempting suicide after.

The only other one I can think of is this...

It's a song about going to a peep show and watch a girl striptease.

The Raveonettes are one of my favorite bands for these kinds of songs.

Here are two of my favorites "Gone Forever", "Last Dance", and "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" but really a lot of their songs could be candidates for this type of song.

I could go on for hours...

suck poppet's post reminded me of this record by Paul Young (originally recorded by Ann Peebles) - I'm sure I heard somewhere that this was also about child abuse:

Not exactly 'upbeat', but still a rocking pop song.....

this song is upbeat? it's slow and depressing.

and where did you get that from about this song being inspired by chris martin's brother's attempted suicide after flunking college? never heard that before. i thought the song was about a nasty breakup.

Even speaking as a gay man, this is one of the sexiest videos I've ever seen...

But, poor Fiona... She starved herself to 90 pounds and had to go into rehab for an eating disorder after this video shoot.

And, if you listen to the lyrics, it's ultimately a very sad song.

(Although, with an odd, almost "psychedelic cabaret" feeling to it...)

It's easy to see why it was a hit back then, but it almost killed her.
