Some great advice but here's mine.
Although it's fine to serve alcohol (or weed if that's your thing), don't make the evening about getting wasted. You began your post by saying this party is a step towards being a more social person and making friends. The best socializing, and meaningful friendships, come from connecting with people. Getting drunk and stoned is about escaping.
Pie and other desserts are fine but if you're doing a movie night, focus more on munchy finger food like popcorn, mixed nuts, chips & dips, pretzels and other bagged snacks, maybe nachos. Sugar tends to hype up people and then they crash into zombies. You want to keep your party awake. And unless food preparation is something you love and are comfortable with, keep it simple and as stress-free for yourself as possible. People aren't coming to your house for culinary triumphs, they're coming to have a good time.
Conversation is how people get to know each other; don't shy from it, encourage it. As host you're responsible for keeping it moving if necessary. Read up on what's happening this week. Politics, music, movies, tv, gossip, sports, business -- whichever subjects you think your new friends might be interested in that'll carry conversation from one place to another. Conversation doesn't have to be intimidating or dull -- it's only talking, sharing information and observations. Be prepared to open up a little, share pieces of yourself, tell a story that's funny even if it's at your own expense.
Especially if it's at your own expense!

Self-deprecating humor from a host helps put people at ease.
Most important thing is set up the evening so you're comfortable and enjoying yourself -- the best host is a person who's having a good time.
