I'm in the UK. I need to rather urgently send a couple of faxes to America. I have a fax machine.

Basically, the numbers begin with 212- and 845-, for example. Do I need to add a country code? If so, where do I add it?

X-posted with EC to double chances of a quick answer.

You have to put a 1 before the numbers you have as 1 is the country code for the USA

Right. Do I ignore the - between numbers?

Basically, do I type 1845####### (censored for privacy)?

yes, just type the numbers....the "-" makes things easier to read ;)

Not entirely sure. The last time I dialed outside the US, I had a ton of numbers I had to press. You might check online for "UK to US phone".

Sorry, took to long to post. :) Circe's answer might work. And yes, the dashes are for our benefit. We group phone numbers together in clusters: three, three, then four. The first three are called the "area code", and indicate the part of the country you're calling - 212 is New York City, I believe. The next three used to be called the "exchange", but now aren't called anything at all. And the last four numbers, I don't believe, have ever been called anything. :)

I believe you have to dial 00(international access code) 1 (code for usa) 123 (area code) etc. so basically prefix the number with 001 and miss out any leading zeros

^ That's what I thought, too...

like when you see +1-555-555-1234, the + also means 00. On some cell phones, if you hit the asterisk key twice, it will automatically revert to a +, avoiding having to dial the 00. Some phones also do this if you hold down the zero
