had my anual blood test the doctor say's i'm on the upper level of uric acid in my blood 7.7
i've stopped all alchol and take 1 tablet of allopurinol a day
any thing else i can do:confused:

Your physician should spell out your medication and dietary needs.

Has he said anything regarding an underlying cause for your condition?

I have been taking Allopurinol for about 25 years. I learned long ago to avoid eating organ meat, such as liver, etc.

You might take a look at a low purine diet.

Did your physician talk with you about uricemia and the implications, etc?

A folk remedy to reduce uric acid levels is to eat red cherries or drink pure cherry juice.

Yes, you can ask him what proof there is that lowering your uric acid level reduces your chance of an adverse health outcome versus the adverse effects of allopurinol.

Only 10% of people with a high uric acid level ever suffer an attack of gout, and although higher uric acid levels are associated with a higher risk of heart attacks we have no proof that lowering uric acid lowers your risk of a heart attack.

If you are asymptomatic, so what?

It sounds like treatment for the sake of treatment to me.

Are you paying your doctor for this sort of thing (i.e. to look for problems that aren't there)? That may have something to do with it.

I'd be inclined to be a lot more conservative and watch and wait.

Oh come off it, he's hardly uricaemic - it's the upper limit of normal.

In the US, the normal range is defined by the lab and the equipment but we usually consider 7 to be the max "normal" value.

But that's not my point. If a practitioner puts a patient on a medication, that same practitioner should be providing counseling about the underlying condition and why the medication was prescribed.

Not to get into an esoteric discussion about treatment protocols that doesn't benefit the poster, absent a history and physical, I'm not going to say whether the treatment was warranted. I'm going to assume the his doctor put him on the medication for a reason- I just wish he would have given him a little more information about why he did so.

It was a one off finding in an annual screening test, he said so in his first post - in the absence of symptoms or other disease (gout/cancer/kidney/liver failure), I wouldn't be reaching straight for the Allopurinol...I'd repeat it again in another 6-12 months time.

Then again, I am not taught to follow protocols and procedures like a robot.

My uric acids levels tested a little higher recently.
My doctor recommended skipping my diuretic two days a week.
I have to take another test in a month to see if there has been a positive change.
You really should discuss this issue in greater detail with your doctor. We all have unique health histories that might impact differently with various treatments.
What's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander.

I've heard cherries are good for gout and other pain too. I know someone with gout who started growing cherrie trees in his back yard. I dunno if it really works, but his wife makes strudel that's really good when its still hot ;).

Alcohol impedes the proper functioning of the Kidneys and beer is especially high in yeast content.

Two big no-no's for high uric acid levels.

Also, scallops, dried peas/beans and white bread are some of the foods that should be avoided.

I have a friend who's gout flares up before he can finish a bowl of seafood chowder. Apparently not bad enough to keep him from consuming it.
