^ but that is inevitable .. because what we call "conservative" here would be at least liberal for you. some of our "conservatives" probably would be name-called "socialists"

America is the most conservative "western democracy" by anyone's definition.

The rise of conservatism is proof that wealthy elites are better protected from economic strife as long as "conservatives" are in charge.

So unless your a rich person, you would need a pretty good reason to vote Republican.

And fear is a powerful motivator for the clueless republican voter.

America has no "true left" like most other countries do.

As I've said, Democrats are now like Republicans were 30 years ago and Republicans have driven off the Cliffs of Crazy Mt. Doom.

I hesitate to even weigh in on anything in this Political board. I don't have the time or inclination to maintain a back-and-forth dialog with those who will shout anyone down. On both sides, the terms used to slam anyone with a different opinion (wingnuts, dumbacrats, rethugicans, democRATS, and on and on and on) is insulting to me even if i were to agree with the poster.

That said, and to your point. Politics is local - but certainly it is influenced by global parameters. If a party attains powers at a time of global recession, that party risks taking on the blame for either the recession itself, or the lack of improving the local climate.

Certainly the populace will vote on the issue of safety - if the threat of war - especially nuclear war - would cause many to vote to mitigate that danger. Who will keep me safer in this environment?

After a party has been in power for a while, the portion of the populace who has not been well served by the party-in-power gets energized while the constituents of that party are no longer exited or are even bored with their own leaders.

So if the Middle East becomes a nuclear hotbed - who will get blamed? Who could have delayed or prevented it? Will it mean war? Who can best repair the damage?

If Greece fails to pay its obligations, who is to blame for that? Who will pick up those obligations? So yes, the game of repositioning will affect Spain and Germany, France and Switzerland.

Because of its size, history, common language and media-centric press, the US is often isolated from the politics of the West. Even Canada, because of its small population, is no more important to the US population than a random collection of perhaps 6 average size states.

So while we are affected by what occurs in other parts of the world, we don't follow it that closely. I doubt many Americans would be able to name the leader of any other country or which party is in control. (Well they could probably name Castro or Putin). They might have known a Thatcher or Blair.

In America Ms Merkel would have been run out of office as a radical liberal. Sad, but thats the truth.

In contrast, I often feel that in Canada far too much attention is given to the US when discussion Canadian federal elections. Sure, given that the US is our biggest trading partner it is relevant to the discussion, but shouldn't we worry about picking the best leader for our country? There are other issues than his/her position on the US.
