Vegemite ban: back off, Bush!

October 23, 2006 12:00am
Article from: Reuters

YOUR chance to tell the White House that Australians won't tolerate the US ban on our favourite spread - no kidding.
Shock, incredulity and downright horror – that has been Australians’ reaction to the news that US has banned Vegemite. And even Americans who can’t stand the stuff think their government has gone too far.

“We have terrorists trying to smuggle in weapons, dirty bombs, WMD, we have druglords smuggling in tons of illegal hallucinogen drugs,” writes an American poster going by the screen name of Fair Opinion at the US-based Free Republic bulletin board. “And border security is spending time and effort to stop people from bringing in vegetable extract!”

Another US poster observed, “It's pretty silly for the government to ban something that no native born American will eat in the first place!”

Meanwhile, Australian bloggers are up in arms.

“I am never going to America,” vows Xochiquetal, while a commenter at Geelong blogger Bernie Slattery’s site foresees US regulators going even further down the road to absurdity, “Americans don’t know what they’re missing … they’ll be banning Tim Tams next.”

Clearly, with an international crisis brewing, only President George W. Bush can end the injustice against one of Australia’s most iconic brands and restore the harmony to trans-Pacific relations.

I know most Americans arent fond of it but isnt this taking it a bit far?

In October 2006, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported that vegemite is banned in the USA, with Customs officials going so far to even search Australians for Vegemite when they enter the country. [1] However, no official statement from the Food and Drug Administration or any other US government agency has been made specifically banning yeast extract products. Some believe that this is a misunderstanding. [2]

spread it on toast yummy or try a fried egg on toast with vegamite better still

That stuff is plain disgusting.

But, why ban it? If people want to eat, let them...

SC

I mean, yes.. it's the most disgusting thing ever.

but i figure if someone wants to walk around smelling like rotten veggies and stale beer...

who am I to judge?

I've tried it. It's vile. Ew. (The best comparison I can come up with is the aftertaste from really cheap vitamins.)

But why are we banning it?

Vegemite has been banned because it contains Folic Acid. The FDA has decreed that no foods other than breads and cereals may contain added Folic Acid. It's pretty silly - you would need to eat a whole jar of the stuff every day for a month to risk poisoning yourself with Folic Acid.

I'm sure there must be some mistake, it's too ridiculous.

On second thoughts it's so ridiculous it's probably true!

The US ban on vegemite is an all-out ban or simply applies to carry-on bags in planes ?

A lot of people, even a lot of Canucks, wouldn't eat poutine if their lives depended on it. I couldn't imagine eating crayfish like they do down south or Bubble and Squeak like they do in Britain (although I wouldn't mind trying a Toad in the Hole).

However, banning Vegemite seems a little silly. It's not like the Aussies are bringing it here by the plane load and force-feeding us.

I like Vegemite. I do prefer Marmite slightly, but it's about four times the price.

Good for the late-night munchies - 'mite on toast.

Just found the article below, turns out second thought was right ](*,) ](*,) :grrr:

THE United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging Australian expatriates there.

The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.
Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up recently and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on toast for breakfast.

Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US border recently.

"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.

"I was flabbergasted." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About Australia in San Antonio, Texas, said he had been forced to stop importing Vegemite six months ago.

"We have completely stopped bringing it in," he said.

"(US authorities) have made a stance and there is nothing that can be done about it."

what the hell is vegemite. ffora while i thought it eas some kind od MTS

NEWS FLASH --WASHINGTON, MONDAY, OCT 23 --

THE WHITE HOUSE HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS REASON BE BELIEVE THE A SUBSTANCE DESIGNATED BY THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT AS A WMD, KNOWN AS "VEGEMITE," IS BEING SMUGGLED INTO THE UNITED STATES BY TERRORISTS FROM CANADA.

THE PENTAGON HAS ORDERED THE ARMED FORCES MOBILIZED AND IT IS EXPECTED THOSE FORCES WILL INVADE CANADA WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

Oh, good. I have time to make cinnamon rolls for all the soldiers. Think any of them would like to try poutine?

The US bans the import of a lot of overseas food products. It needs to stop. A friend brought me a salami from Italy and customs seized it. That salami cost 25 euros!! :grrr: :grrr: :grrr:
