USA tipping culture

Was this from the wating staff towards the customers? Or from the customers towards the waiters/waitreses?

Either way it's sad :(
From the servers talking amongst themselves.

Whatever, JL....

The people in the industry know, from long experience, that women are crummy tippers.

Sorry if this f*cks with your PC version of the world.

Except that I wasn't stretching my personal experience into a universal truth. I made an observation about my own experiences, and I phrased it as such.

It is the culture of America to tip. So I tip. I have been raised and taught to tip, and I don't see what's wrong with it.

If you have a problem with it, then that's your problem and not mines. It isn't going to change because you want to be a pretentious snob too busy sniffing shit.

Why don't they make that tipping fee is compulsory so it doesn't sounds like begging.

Its good for both sides. The customer know the total amount they have to pay and the worker don't need to ask or wait for tips.
It isn't considered begging. It is part of the culture.

its good to know different customs even tho we all speak English. ;)

to avoid tipping in the US always carry Electronic cards .:p
When you pay with an debit or credit card at some restraurants. They ask if you want to add a tip for the waiter.

Point taken.

My limited experience visiting non-tipping places is mixed...

In the Bahamas a service charge was always added, and the service was abysmal.

In Japan, there's no tipping, and everything (even fast food) is perfection.

For us, in the US, I see no changes coming to the system.....
Yeah, but for Japan, their culture is one of showing and practicing perfection. Therefore you expect it when you go to Japan that the service anywhere is going to be impeccable.

I usually tip...But then again, I am a Canadian.

Delivery personnel, given that I used to be one, usually get about two dollars from me.

As for dining in, I use the standard refill/service scale. If I've gotten 2+ refills, without having to ask for them, you start off at $3.

If the service is really good, the waitress/waiter is personable, etc...Then I can go as high as $6 - $8 in some cases.

Of course, if the opposite happens, I start subtracting. Although, I've yet to find a server willing to have to tip me for their bad service...

i'm canadian as well and i tip as a portion of the bill. delivery drivers get 10-15%, waiters/bartenders get 20-30%. with restaurants tho, it depends on the wine. if i order a $250 bottle of wine, they're not getting $50 extra just based on dollar value of the bottle. i typically give a $20 corkage "tip" regardless of the price of the wine.
