USA vs. Canada

I hate it whenever this "pissing contest" comes up.
I've never had the pleasure of visiting Canada, but I've had some pretty wonderful Canadian friends.
I grew up in NY and spent time in Seattle and Alaska, so I presume the flora and fauna are fairly similar.
As for the people, I beleive we have much more in common than we have differences.
Our govts can vary from liberal to conservative at different times and that can be a source of aggravation for both countries.
Young men from both countries gave their life blood, frequently side by side, in two world wars and numerous peace keeping efforts thereafter.
Instead of a "Who is better", we should both focus on the real enemy which we all know to be international terrorism.
God bless both our countries and let's focus more on brotherhood.

It's hard for me to make an un-biased opinion b/c I've never lived in the United States.

I'd rather live in Canada (b/c I live here, so I'm used to it)
I think Canada's more respected....

As for the gay thing......I know people are quick to say that Canada's this big gay-friendly country, but if you lived where I lived for the first 20 years of my life, your opinion whould change. Trust me.

Canada Canada Canada. If only I could be a citizen...it's a dream for another day.

No country is perfect, I dont believe for a second that we are a perfect and accepting society... I grew up in rural alberta for gods sake...

Regardless, we can marry the ones we love, we can live free of discrimination by the government, we are protected from hate crimes... lets not take these liberties for granted. ;)

1. Where would you rather live and why?
I'm considering moving to Canada. Why? Canada offers equal rights, national health care, no Republicans, no Republicans and no Republicans. Of course, those 9 month long Canadian winters may be a problem...

2. Which country is more tolerent of gays and their lifestyle?
Canada. It might not be perfect, but it's better than the USA, where we are practically second-class citizens.

3. Which country is more respected around the world?
Canada. After 6 disastrous years of George W.M.D. Bush (a.k.a. the "Hemorrhoid that walks like a man") the USA is regarded with fear and loathing - not respect...

Born and raised in the USA, btw...

I'm afraid to live in Canada for fear a helicopter may drop out of the sky and onto my head at any moment.

to be fair, it would probably light on fire, explode and be incinerated before it hit your head :p

For those who have visited either country or live in them, here are some questions:

1. Where would you rather live and why?
2. Which country is more tolerent of gays and their lifestyle?
3. Which country is more respected around the world?

This needn't turn into a battle... just a bit of friendly competition. So what do you think?

p.s. Yes, I AM Canadian!
1. I'd rather live in Switzerland, but could live in either Canada or the US as long as we exclude the hinterland, although Canada edges slightly ahead because I grew up in Toronto.

2. I have been away too long, but I think it depends hugely on where in these big countries you live.

3. What do you mean by respect? I think Canadians get a better reception around the world than Americans.

Canadian here...

1.) I'd stay in Canada, and you couldn't pay me to live in the States. I like being able to visit an emergency room without having to pay upwards of $500 just for stiches or bandaids and such.

Not to mention, our social programs have a bit more funding flowing into them...Whereas the USA tends to focus on defense spending and such.

2.) Canada was a bit more tolerent, but much like the USA...There's areas where you wouldn't wanna be out. Small towns in the west especially. Just like you couldn't come out in the deep south in a small town.

Each has areas that are slightly better, and some that are worse. However, Canada had no real qualms about legalizing same-sex marriage so they win for that.

3.) Canada has a world reputation as peacekeepers, and sort of an intermediary on difficult issues. We're not the first to rush off to war, nor are we the type to go out and start one.

But the nice guy reputation leads to some problems, with other nations trying to walk over us. Especially in regards to Northern Sovereignty. Denmark and the USA are both sort of pushing on us for that one...Seeing as global warming will open up the Northwest Passage and a new trade route.

But, I'd go for Canada. But yes, I am biased.

Oh god let me tell you. The U.S HANDS DOWN. Canada is so D list its not even funny, there's really no reason someone should ever have to go there, at all. I can count on one finger how many guys i would bone there, to make things a bit more simple 99 Percent of the male population there are straight up FUGLY, no lie. There city's are boring and quiet as hell, and did i mention, RACIST.
And dont listine to that free health care bull crap, just because its a frigen LIE.

Anything that has even had anything to do with public success has moved to the U.S and never looked back. Canada should be apologizing to the WORLD for Celina Dion and Conan O'Brien,Avrial Lavgine, yuck. The country's nothing, for it to even be compared to anything other than lets say a state like, East Denver should be a crime. Lets push Canada down to the F list and have them drop off the map entirely.

Hey just my two cents, im SURE most of you may not agree with me but this just my opinion.*Actavates flame sheld*

Who pissed in your cheerios? :p

Even though I love Alberta, I gotta agree with E_P, maybe next time you visit you should go outside Alberta, maybe to the #1 city in the world according to the UN - vancouver, or maybe Montreal or Toronto or Halifax...

Calgary may be racist and boring when compared to other cities, but at least we are the cleanest city in the world.

Comrad, that number below your name "13". Is that really the number of posts you've made or your age?

Frankly, the title of this thread was the first thing to go wrong. When you use the term "vs", that automatically instigates a war.
