SAN DIEGO — The new commandant of the Marines Corps said Saturday that now is the wrong time to overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" policy prohibiting gays from openly serving in the military, as U.S. troops remain in the thick of war in Afghanistan.

"There's risk involved; I'm trying to determine how to measure that risk," Gen. James Amos said. "This is not a social thing. This is combat effectiveness. That's what the country pays its Marines to do."

There is none. It is just a multi-syllable excuse they spout off to sound knowledgeable.

Israel, which is under constant threat, and whose military is in constant preparedness to go into full action at any section, has openly serving gays.

Canada has openly serving gays (and gay officers get married on military bases with full honours), and we've allied with American troops overseas for years. In fact, the vast majority of America's foreign allies with whom American troops serve closely with, permit openly gay officers. Many American troops have already been serving with openly gay soldiers!

Of course, the American Right probably thinks that's the reason you've not caught Bin Ladin yet.

have functioning integral straight, gay, multi racial religious and non that

are participants. Big BUT here, those accepted into the U.S. military knew

the stand on homosexuality. Back in the days of conscription people would

actually claim to be 'gay to avoid the draft.

The U.S. needs to go to a level playing field and do an annual (not anal)

vote of all affected members. When the Yeas outnumber the Naes then

by American Standards and Tradition.....Majority Rules.

Of course, this is just one concept and I am not the sharpest knife in the

drawer by any means....EH?

My husband just ran the Marine Marathon. I was surprised to see many of the Marines running the event for I have seen them at the gay clubs in DC and at various parties. Wasn't aware they were Marines but there they were in all their colors.

As for the Marathon, the hubby finished well ahead of a number of the Marines so I guess being "fit" is not connected to gay in any way.

Firstly; my post solely addressed the often touted lie that gays in the military will harm “military readiness.”

Secondly; civil liberties must never be decided by a popularity contest.

Perhaps we have a misunderstanding here. I think the military situation is

a pit in hell. A morass of gargantuan proportions and a situation that could blow

up helping no one and damaging everyone. I did my 12 years of Active Duty,

foreign and domestic from the early 1970's in some places and situations I

still deal with.

Opening up the Military in the U.S. is NOT like doing it at the local 7-11 or at a

Wal-Mart. There are tremendous ramifications and my contention is every

day, another step. We are ALL on the way .....not in it.
