Is this fact or fiction ?
My sister believe her niece slight brain damage was due to vaccines.

Fiction.

The "researcher" who originally made the claims was later discovered to have falsified his research. His license to practice medicine was revoked.

Dr Blaylock is a bit controversial. He appears regularly on the Christian Broadcasting Network (Pat Robertson's TV network) in the US making claims such as taking vitamin D will prevent the flu, so you don't need the flu shot. He's part of the Christian conservative movement and he believes that there is a conspiracy in the US government to euthanize large numbers of US citizens.

I wouldn't believe much of what Dr Blaylock says.

Here's some jewels from Pat Robertson for your entertainment:

Kara, here is my sister's response:

"yes i know about blaylock but most importantly, he is not some idiot talking but a top class brain surgeon who has got nothing to benefit talking about the negatives of vaccines!

i know about wakefield too; what happened to him makes me doubt even more about vaccines & government propaganda! wakefield is a 4th generation doctor and he was one of the best in his field until the media (funded by big phrama) and in cooperation with the government decided to punish him for speaking the truth! many experts had been punished for speaking out, even doctors in Australia! their license had been taken and careers ruined! that's why doctors are so afraid to say anything bad about vaccines! "

I blame parents like Jenny McCarthy on the whole anti-vaccination scare and recent outbreaks of measles and whooping cough. As a kid no one my age knew ANYONE older than thirty who had these diseases and sure some of us developed autism and other autism spectrum symptoms but we were all very healthy. Then comes that bogus study which claimed to link autism to vaccines and the doctor responsible admitting he made stuff up for it and everything comes undone and many children suffered as a result. I'm sorry but parents who don't vaccinate their children out of fear of autism are just selfish because they want perfect children. I had all the vaccines and I am perfectly fine. I have Asperger's disorder and I am perfectly fine. I live on my own, drive a car, and even had a few part time jobs. I may have to make adjustments to adapt to my Asperger's but I am healthy. Parents who don't vaccinate their kids should be arrested for child endangerment because they are putting other children at risk by not vaccinating their own kids who then spread diseases to other children.

Kara, here is my sister's response...
The immunization issue is very much like terrorism or fear of flying: it makes an irrational fear of a low risk item (immunization) and ignores a very high risk item (the disease that the immunization protects against).

Your sister would be best served by doing some volunteer work with international health organizations in countries where childhood diseases still kill thousands of children. There are some things that we worry about with immunizations- like high fevers or other fairly common reactions that can be managed. These effects pale in comparison to the diseases that the shots are designed to protect children (and their classmates) from.

These videos shows what happens when some overly neurotic parent doesn't want their child immunized... without giving thought to what can happen to other family's children:

If your sister really wants to be neurotic about something she needs to do some reading about the overuse of antibiotics in children. There's some very legitimate research in that area.

Facts are irrelevant to the anti-vaxxers. It's like the Enlightenment never occurred. It's impossible to reason with them. And they are a menace. The problem is that the government doesn't distinguish between really necessary vaccines and unnecessary vaccines. The government should only mandate the essential vaccines.

One of the issues that is endemic to public health is that societal memory for tragedy is short-lived. Our grandparents lived with the deaths of friends and family members from diphtheria, tuberculosis, polio and another childhood diseases. To them, these shots were a godsend (and may be the reason that many of us are here today). The situation is very similar to the younger generation of gays and HIV- the history and the toll of the AIDS in the previous generation has been lost.

The liberal exemptions that have been given in the past are going to be harder to get because of some of the latest outbreaks of pertussis and measles. It was missed this year but there were 117 cases of measles linked to a single case of measles in a child at an amusement park in California. Measles in particular is particularly infectious. If you were to take expose 10 non-immunized children to the measles, 9 to 10 of them will develop the measles. What most people don't realize is that measles is so contagious that one person infected with measles is expected to infect 7-10 other people if those people are not current on their MMR immunization.

The homeschoolers are going to be a continuing problem but that's another area where there is an overdue crackdown.

The anti-vaccine groups have been around for about as long as vaccines have been available. One of the interesting things about the scares is that (as Ben Goldacre says) they respect local cultural boundaries. In the 1990s there was a big story in France that the Hep B vaccine caused MS. I worked for 15 years vaccinating people in London up until a couple of years ago, and I'd still regularly see young French people refusing to be vaccinated because of what their parents had told them. This was completely isolated to France and no-one else had heard of the story.

The argument here is that this and all the other stories like it demonstrate how the scares reflect the local political and societal concerns rather than real risk data, otherwise we'd see the rate of MS increase worldwide and there'd be an international panic, plus international reportage.

I find it very hard to argue with people who believe in the vaccine scares; my sister is one of them and has refused to vaccinate my niece. I think this is because their belief stems from conspiracy theories and anti-establishment ideas, and if they really believe that the truth is being covered up then it will be difficult to come up with a counter argument that can wash that conviction away.

vaccines are totally safe. it's been studied over and over. unfortunately your sister willl figure that out when your niece catches something that could have been prevented. I hope and pray nothing happens to your niece but her mother isn't very smart.

I am 100% with GeorgiaDude. Kids that were born in the 70s and 80s never got dangerous diseases that often and I remember learning about mumps and whooping cough and not knowing anyone our age who ever got them. As a kid I remember watching The Flintstones once and Barney faked having the mumps and I laughed because I literally didn't know what mumps were or even that they could be deadly. And yeah some of us became autistic but we were probably the healthiest kids growing up from being vaccinated.

my roommates daughter didn't vaccinate her son. last year he contracted whooping cough. poor little guy was sick for a long time. since then she's changed her mind and he as well as his little brother are up to date on their shots.

I hate to say this but I have often thought the ONLY way these anti-vaccination parents would see their error is by having their kids get these horrible diseases. I am not proud of that thought but it's true. People like them often do not change unless they see the damage they are causing when they see it first hand for themselves.

"big pharma (in bed with the media, medical professions & govs) are very good at propaganda. in wakefield's case, who was outside the courts cheering him on? it was all the mums & dads that had children injured by vaccines!
i would trust the instincts of parents ANY DAY compared to any "expert"! too many parents say the same things.......their kid was fine & healthy but after the vaccine, they are different.....
if vaccines really work, then why be afraid of those who don't vaccinate? and plus if vaccines really work why can vaccinated people still get the disease?
yes, i want a "perfect" kid, any loving parent would. and i will not burn my child so that yours (others) can keep warm!

" no, vaccines are like tobacco science; docs, experts, govs use to say it was fine and was smoked widely even by docs! those few experts that spoke against it had their careers ruined! it took a long time before the message got through and change happened!
> these co called "vaccine preventable" diseases is not common now because of better nutrition & sanitation and not vaccines as it's so widely credited by big pharma propaganda for obvious reasons ($$$)!

yes, i have done volunteer work in one of the poorest in the world, poor nutrition & sanitation is a major contributor to kids getting these "vaccine preventable disease"

> i'm not neurotic, just trying to do what's best for my kid. if you have done your research and still vaccinate your kid, then i respect that, i ask you respect my decision also without being abusive!
> agree, antibiotics is way overused, thanks to big pharma and our caring doctors!"

Honestly all I can say about Jenny McCarthy is that she is only reason she is famous was because she did Playboy. She's just a big chested blonde bimbo who thinks she knows everything just because she was on The View. I think that the only reason she was put on that show was to increase male viewer ratings. She's been given reasons why vaccines are safe and she basically called the people who tell this liars. And parents who vaccinate are more afraid of disease epididemic outbreaks and that's why they don't like anti-vaccine parents. They are posing a threat to other children. Also Donnie Wahlberg could do so much better than this bimbo. There I said it.

Poor nutrition and sanitation causes dieases prevented by vaccines? Try telling THAT to those affected by the measles outbreak in Disneyland....

This thread started with a simple question "Fact or fiction?".

The answer was "false science" and "invalidated research". You were given information and references based upon the professional experience (and in some cases, personal experience) of several people who work in healthcare.

If we've given the impression that there's an opening for "responses" and debates, that's not a valid impression.

Hopefully this will work out for your nieces and nephews (and the community that they are part of) and they won't get these illnesses.

The link between modern life and autism cannot be ignored. America has a much higher rate of all kinds of disease because of 'advances'. To dismiss vaccines automatically is dishonesty.
