Vagina. You don't even have to be fully erect to penetrate a vagina. But to penetrate an ass you have to be rock hard. Also the way the ass/vagina is physically positioned.

Anal homosexuality has only been like, socially accepted since modern times. Depending on the culture, homosexuality may have been accepted but penetrating a male was considered a taboo, (well, especially for the penetrated) or something you do to shame another guy.
