Canada's murder laws are a joke in many ways. Not that ours is perfect but someone shouldn't be able to do what he did and get out in less than six years.

Canada doesn't take criminal responsibility for death seriously enough. This is one area where I am ashamed of my country's record. And it isn't because the victim was gay, I'm afraid they could be this lenient with any murderer. I know where they can throw the key after they lock him up.

But when compared to the US system that would just execute him (next to innocent men like David Milgard and Guy Paul Morin) with out really giving a shit if they did it or not, I'll take the Canadian system that would let a few fuckers go free than punish innocent men who did nothing.

you make it sound like we are marching our death row prisoners off to the gas chamber in single file. we aren't. if you are condemned to die in the u.s it takes years and years of appeals and costs millions in an attempt to be sure we are not executing an innocent person. Has that happened, yes, is it wonderful, no There is no perfect judcial system because it is a man made thing, people are not perfect, all they can do is try to mete out justice as the laws allow. sometimes it works great, others, like in this instance it does not. If you are condemned to die in a u.s. court i think you are more likely to live out your life in prison, cept if youre in texas or florida.

I must confess I don't hear much news about crimes in Canada except the exceptional ones, like the shooting at the college. I don't believe this particular crime made national news here. But from what you have said it sounds like the judicial systems as it pertains to gays is not much different than here.

"At the time, the judge ruled there was no evidence before the court that Webster was targeted because he was gay." A gay man is attacked in a known gay area with bats and golf clubs at night. WTF are guys doing with bats and golf clubs at night in a gay area if not to do violence to gays? As in the US, the problem is not so much the laws on the books, but the judges, the prosecutors and even sometimes the juries. What needs to change are attitudes and perceptions and we all have a role in that.

I surely hope no one is shortsighted enough to think this particular case is reason to support Harper, an ass in an ass' clothing.

I think that is probably one of the most asinine statements I have ever heard. How can you defend yourself against several men with weapons? I can take on one man(and have), maybe two? I'm lucky and can defend myself, but if several came at me I would be another statistic and headline. I'm sorry about your friend(boyfriend), I know that you felt this personally when they let this man out of prison early.

No, I did not know about this case. Disgusting people like that will suffer the same in prison( we can hope). Unfortunately the little sister will have to live with that horrible memory the rest of her life. Lots of therapy in her future.
