Personally I don't, but a Bi friend of mine had it done and he said there was nothing to it. It is basically an out-patient procedure and you should be able to return home immediately after the procedure and go to work the next day. If you have a really physical-type strenuous job, they may ask you to wait 3 days or so before returning to work. Minor bruising/swelling is common. Your doctor will discuss that with you. You may have to wear a jock strap for a couple days. After the procedure is complete, you will still ejaculate semen as usual (and it will look like it always has), but it will contain no sperm. Sperm will not longer be able to pass to the penis and will be absorbed by the body and dissipated. He said you should continue to use contraception until at least 2 sperm count tests come back negative. (Consult with your doctor) Sperm count gradually decreases after about 3 months, then sperm is no longer present in the semen. Most men experience no problem with the procedure. You can have sex again in about a week and there is no effect on sexual desire.

A vasectomy makes a man permanently sterile. As I understand it, there is a reversal procedure but it is very expensive ($7000-$35,000) and often has mixed results but I don't know much about it. I'm not a doctor.

Had one in 88. Outpatient procedure. Nothing really to it. Only had minor bruising & swelling. Only had 1 sperm count test after 1 month. Can't even see the 2 incision marks after 6 mos. Really eases the mind if you don't want to worry about conceiving.

I had it done in the 70's.

Nothing to it. A couple of days of minor discomfort.

Everything more or less normal after that.

I would never recommend such decision to anyone. You're taking away a major part of yourself....How old are you?! And what happens, if by some act of god, you find the perfect woman that you feel you can spend the rest of your life with (it could happen!!!) and she wants to bear your children?! This is irreversible...keep that in mind.

with that said, I'm 19, gay, and have no experience with vasectomies, but I couldn't imagine doing that to myself.

im a operating room nurse and have assisted with many of them .. nothing to them - local anaesthetic too so u can watch your operation ;)

not to sound patronising or preachy but u still need condoms for sti/stds... im sure u know that but what kind of nurse be if i didnt state the obvious!!

u will be fine mate!!

Had mine several years ago. Honestly, I've had dental work that was worse. It was not bad at all. And the surgeon was really cute!!

very easy procedured....you can lie there and watch the doctor do it.
minor discomfort....just lie on the sofa for a couple of days after the procedure.

you still have sperm in your ejaculate for a while till it all gets through your system

let the doctor test and tell you when you are completely safe

Had mine done in 2002. Just before my daughter was born. There really isn't anything to the procedure itself. I only had local anesthesia, no sedation and watched the entire thing. Had some b.s. conversation with the urologist and went home afterwards. From the time I walked into the clinic and I was walking out was < an hour. I would describe the pain as a dull ache sensation. Take your pain meds as ordered, keep an icepack in place and watch some tv over the weekend. Come Monday you should be able to go back to work. There are different protocols for the post op semen check so make sure you follow exactly what the doctor tells you to do when it comes time for the sperm check.

There was a good point that was brought up about this being permanent and the chances of you changing your mind. The doctor that did my surgery said it something like this. "Forget about there being a reversal surgery. This is forever. So make sure you are making the right decision." My wife had to sign a form stating she understood this was permanent as well. You will be sterile for the remainder of your life. Being sterile does not make you immune to STD's. Just children. So play safe

Make sure this is the decision you want. Dont rush into anything and if you choose to have the surgery, don't worry about it. It sounds ALOT worse than it really is.
