Veterans Running Up The Deficit

Well, that just reflects the ease of deciding what shouldn't be covered and the relative difficulty of proving that things should be. (mainly because the military would hide how dangerous certain weapons were, and it would take time, and pressure, in order to get them to admit it)

I agree that they should default to being more generous than being too stingy, but at the same time there also needs to be some common sense with spending. Just because its a program for funding veteran's medical care does not mean that it should be beyond scrutiny, and should be beyond questioning.

Forgive me for questioning your compassion. I shouldn't have done that.
But, let me say this for the sake of argument. I will agree with you that ailments are being treated that had nothing to do with the Vets service, Viet Vets. What I'm trying to point out is that is the way the Bill or whatever happened to make the VA treat us is just the way it is. There are many of us out there that have been exposed to Agent Orange. It is probably not known the extent of illnesses caused by AO.
I would hope the VA is treating the Vets from Kuwait for whatever is happening to them. I believe they were exposed to gasses and with all the oil wells burning.
Each conflict has its own ailments. Iraq and Afghanistan with all the brain injuries that are probably not being treated.
Take care of the Vets. Get the money however you can to help them.:grrr:

I want to know why this is not a moral choice.

Why do people want to turn care of the men and women who defend our nation into dollar signs. They should get this as part of their bargain for doing the job they do. The VA is already there, and annual checkups could save countless lives.

Why aren't we giving them the ability to buy into medicare ? Why aren't we giving it to them outright and lust let them deal with a copay?

America is great because sometimes we realize that things need to be done and then we do them. The conservatives here will argue to a fault that killing Saddam Hussein was a moral imperative, and all the war expenses were needed, but somehow lose their morality when it comes to caring for your armed services healthcare.

that seems really shady and disrespectful. It sends a really bad message that americans ought not send. That life is less valuable than the death we wish to impose on other states, preemptively.

Just adding something.
I went to my Dr at the VA clinic here yesterday. I had a short convo with him about Viet Vets, Agent Orange and why the VA is treating us like this.
As I have said. That is just the way it goes. The VA is authorized to treat Viet Nam Vets and all ailments they may come up with. With or without exposure to Agent Orange. It is not known just who may have come up with that exposure without knowing about it.
I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, just thought this might bring this thread to a civil end.

Or, as Kuli said in another thread, its balancing our obligation morally with our ability to pay. Our resources are not unlimited, and it is not unreasonable to limit what we spend on vet's healthcare to conditions related to their service.

well if we can't give them healthcare after asking them to lay down their life, then I guess it would be best to not ask so much of so few and reward them so little.

People just go on from day to day forgetting that there are people dying over in afghanistan, and they are american soldiers. More than that, there are numerous injuries.

We just stay home, typing on the internet, going to the mall, taking in a flick, having a beer with the boys... all of that safely because they make it so.

we can do better and if we can't we ought not ask. Of all the things people should NOT bitch about is the pay and benefits for veterans. There are SO many other ways to make the money back.

Ehh...

I can't give people values. I can just tell people what mine are.

They get healthcare. Their service does NOT entitle them to unlimited, no-questions-asked healthcare, however.

Well, judging by the actions of these senators, a majority of americans believe the same thing that I do.

In reality, they don't. While certain benefits have been changed or deleted in specific cases, Americans have nearly always overwhelmingly approved veterans benefits.
