I wish shows would stop with this "The Greatest" specials hype. People are in an uproar in many blogs..Where's Patti Labelle and Luther Vandross?

Michael Jackson will probably be number 1...Dolly Parton will PROBABLY be somewhere in the Top-5...

I'm surprised to see so much diversity. I did not expect to see Alicia Keys and Jay-Z at all.

Being biased, I do believe Mariah should be higher and leaving out Patti and Luther sucks. Take out NWA, Steely Dan and Cream.

Beyonce placed higher than Mariah something is not right. However its Vh1, no one cares.

Count me in as another who thought that some of the placements were odd. Justin Timberlake and Beyonce should have been lower on the list. Whitney and Mariah should have been higher.

I watched these. I wasn't so sure about placement either. And it's all very mainstream. I am not a country fan but if you are doing greatest artist you should have at least Dolly Parton on the list or Reba. I get why Whitney was so low. She let it all slip out of her hands. Mariah should be higher and I'm not sure Justin should even be on the list. He's better then The Pretenders? And Justin is better then Cyndi Lauper who didn't even make the list? He's not better then Mariah. And Prince is better then Elvis?! Elvis was the king. He changed music as the world knew it. Prince sang about rubbers in the glove box. Fleetwood Mac was way to low. And Radiohead is 28 while The Doors are way down on the list? I scream bullshit to this.

Wow Mariah just barely made the list...

Beyonce placing higher than Whitney & Mariah...girl please. But at least she not higher than Whitney by much...

These lists are laughable.

Lists are like assholes. Everybody has one.

I think part of the problem is that the little criteria that was given (musicianship, artistry, impact, relevance, talent/skills) was not given a ranking. In other words, they never stated if artistry was more important than musicianship and so forth.

You are correct when you say that it is all very mainstream. Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, and Garth Brooks should have definitely been placed on this list at some point.

The only place I disgree with you is Prince vs. Elvis. While Elvis had more of an impact at his time, Prince has Elvis in many other areas. However, I'm not basing my idea off the Vh1 list.

She let it all slip out of her hands.

Whitney Houston Crowned The Greatest Diva Of All Time

Whitney-Houston-Superbowl.jpg

The word “diva” gets thrown around a lot when describing female songstresses like Mariah Carey, Celin Dion and Beyoncé, but there can only be one true commanding prima donna that upstages them all. Using categories such as “Taking The Listener On An Emotional Journey”, “Iconic Song/Moment”, and “Hand Gestures”, The Awl got all scientific in their quest to identify music’s greatest diva. It was a close race, but Whitney Houston nabbed the all-time top honor, besting Aretha Franklin by a Super Bowl performance. [The Awl]

Whitney's popularity didn't even last 10 years. Her last hit was probably in 1993. She did let it slip through her fingers and right up her nose and into Bobby's hands. Janet has her way beat with hits and filling concerts and she didn't even make the list. Which I can't believe. And I have seen recent concert footage of Whitney. She does take you on a journey alright. One where she has to keep leaving the stage and her voice is shot. She gets booed now where she used to get a standing ovation. Whitney is probably the biggest disappointment I have ever seen in the music industry. She really fucked up bad.

.........ok. ;)

Elvis was great at what he did...steal other people's songs and take all the credit for it. Prince should be higher than him.

Now I'm not that much of a jackass to believe that Elvis shouldn't be on the list at all. He was incredibly influential when it comes to controlling an audience and stage presence. He just wasn't the greatest thing ever and should not be anywhere near the top.

And I'll echo the sentiments about Justin Timberlake. Top 100...I can see that..but he should be like number 99 or something.

Mariah should be higher! And I do believe she should be higher than Whitney. Mariah actually wrote and produced her songs. Whitney's biggest hit, 'I Will Always Love You' (amazing as it is! Easily Top 3 vocal performances in recorded music history), was a cover. Mariah clearly is a better artist than she is.

As far as Elvis is concerned, I co-sign. Not to mention, African Americans had been using many of his movements for years, so that actually detracts from his originality.

As far as Justin Timberlake is concerned, why did Usher not make the list? He's pretty much the African American equivalent of Justin Timberlake. He's been around longer than Justin, yet he received no mention on the countdown.

As far as the Mariah vs. Whitney ranking, we don't have a clear list of criteria of how these artists are being evaluated. If it were artistry and artistry only, which it cannot be, then Mariah would have Whitney in that aspect (songwriting).

VH1 100 Greatest Artists of All Time – Worst List of All Time?

09/11/2010 // 5:46 pm // Article by Brian Willett

Wow. VH1 may feature Behind The Music, but it appears that the station knows nothing about that music. VH1 just unveiled its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list, and it is full of perplexing placements and disappointments.

As you can see below, the VH1 Greatest Artists of All Time list is horribly flawed, with a number of artists rated far too high, many rated too low, and many absent from the list. The list seems to be skewed in terms of mainstream popularity and modernity.

It’s hard to pick a place to start on this flawed list, but having Guns N’ Roses above Johnny Cash seems a little odd. And I understand that Beyonce might have had one of the best videos of all time (of all time!), but should she really be rated as “greater” than Whitney Houston, someone who paved the way for her (and all the other female singers who came after)?

In terms of rock music, does anyone actually listen to KISS? If so, shouldn’t they have realized that the glam band is not better than The Doors? Likewise, Pearl Jam seems to have been ripped off, barely making the list at 93, behind the Bee Gees, LL Cool J and ABBA. Really? That’s like giving Aerosmith the 30th spot and putting Coldplay ahead of R.E.M. Oh, wait…

And those not represented – Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers, and countless others. We can’t even begin to list who was overlooked. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Justin Timberlake is there but the Mamas and the Papas are nowhere to be seen? No Simon and Garfunkel, either.

The list isn't stupid. The people who made it are.

ABBA was one of the most popular band all time, and I think they may have the most records sold worldwide (they held that record at one time even more than the beatles) yet these more modern bands are ranked higher than them? Sorry ABBA on my list has to be in the top 50. And yeah the rankings for a lot of people are screwed up and a lot of snubs.
