VICTORY! Judge Orders Air Force to Reinstate Maj. Margaret Witt

Great news! U.S. District Court Judge Ronald B. Leighton ordered the Air Force to reinstate ACLU client and flight nurse Major Margaret Witt, who was discharged from the Air Force in 2006 under the military's unconstitutional "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy.

Judge Leighton found, after a six-day trial, that Maj. Witt's sexual orientation did not negatively impact unit cohesion or morale. In fact, as several members of Maj. Witt's former unit testified at trial, her discharge was "devastating" and "negatively impacted the unit."

Followup to the above. Tell your senators to stand on the right side of history and vote to keep DADT repeal in the National Defense Authorization Act.

This link is to the place to send a message to your Senators. I don't care if you do it or not, but you must!!

Tell Congress to Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

The Senate Armed Services Committee recently adopted an amendment as part of this year's defense authorization bill, which would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), the law that forbids gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the military. Your Senator's vote will be crucial to making sure that this repeal language stays in the defense bill.

Since 1994, over 13,500 service members have been discharged under DADT due to their sexual orientation. We can no longer afford to lose some of our most talented soldiers, linguists, intelligence analysts, and doctors to this discriminatory and unconscionable policy. It hurts military readiness… it hurts unit cohesion… and, it is antithetical to American values.

Take action below: Tell your senators to stand on the right side of history and vote to keep DADT repeal in the National Defense Authorization Act.

i was hoping it was going to say she was going to say she was reinstated into her old job....guess we will have to just wait and see

Good news indeed. In defense of President Obama's lack of action, although DADT could have been lifted by a presidential order, he wanted it to go through the courts, which is what's happening. Something about "separation of powers."

I think he understands that when Sarah Palin is president, his presidential order would be nullified.

What we have is another small step toward getting rid of DADT, but its happening soooo slowly. ](*,)

sarah palin will never be president, but pawlenty could and he most definitely would change that.

HOORAY!

I'm happy for Major Witt and this is a step in the right direction. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of gay discrimination.

BTW, Sarah Palin will never be President. She's unelectable.

I think I need to move fast -- not that I have any place to move to, but it struck me as I read about this in another spot that in places like where I live there could well be a backlash, and being homeless might arguably be better than having to shoot bashers out for someone to harm.

p.s. -- I'm hoping the "Goldwater Democrats" will put a damper on the bashers. Those are the ones who agree what counts is if a person shoots straight, not is straight.

You're right - I hope. I was just being sarcastic. What I should have said is any Republican would do likewise. :(

P.S. It was said that Ronald Reagan was unelectable too!

Any Republican politician, you mean. My mom is still a Republican, and she'd be slapping some people up the side of the head.

She was cheering the order this morning at coffee in the retirement community dining hall. Next to her was a Republican lady who was a nurse in Korea -- a lesbian, and everyone knew it. On the other side was a Republican lady who still has a Goldwater pin. She pronounced with satisfaction that the lesbian lady had shown them the stitches are the same after they pull out the bullet, and that old Barry was right about the rest: so long as they can shoot straight, it doesn't matter if they are straight.

That reminds me, I still have a LBJ pin.:gogirl:

The real irony is that LBJ's victory led right to tens of thousands of badly-prepared young Americans getting fed into a meat grinder, whereas Goldwater opposed diving into Indochina on the specious basis of alliance with France, because doing so would mean we were supporting colonialism -- a definite no-no to a very libertarian conservative. So whereas Goldwater got mocked for holding that using nukes would be a legitimate choice for defense of America, Johnson funded ongoing and increasing slaughter of Americans to fight people many of whom just waanted to have their own homes in peace.

Thank you Judge Leighton, a George W. Bush appointee.

I goofed. What meant was any current Neocon gay-basher. The Barry Goldwater quote still warms my heart. :-)

I am in the "I don't get the big deal" camp because I know a ton of gay men still in the Navy and Marines, a lot of them actually have boyfriends they live with and no one gives a damn. I asked a straight friend off a major carrier and he said he knew a ton of guys and women on the carrier who were gay and no one cared. So how is that people still get discharged? How did Witt come to anyone's attention and who bothered to press a case forward?

Two recruits in boot camp, one reading from an article titled, "DADT To Fall"....

Recruit #1 (reading): "Dude, they're gonna put gays in here with us! Seriously -- we all shower together!"

Recruit #2 (furiously polishing boots): Moron -- I'm more worried about the sarge getting me in the ass than one of us getting me up the ass!

I thought he was pointing out that even Bush could get something right once in a while.

ummmmm no......none of his other posts suggest that.....but if you want to give him the benefit of the doubt...thats your right....btw ....no one polishes boots in boot camp anymore lol
