I just saw those teabags in the supermarket. "green tea - with added vitamin c". are they kidding? afaik vitamin c is destroyed at the temperatures of boiling water - or is there any way to preserve the vitamin c, and this is not about tricking stupid customers?

If you're going to take additional vitamin c, you might as well add it separately as a pill or dissolved in water. That way at least you know how much you're taking. I don't see the sense of combining it with another food?

Doesn't really answer your question though.

Also I don't plan to take additional vitamin c :)

From the wikipedia article

Vitamin C chemically decomposes under certain conditions, many of which may occur during the cooking of food. Normally, boiling water at 100°C is not hot enough to cause any significant destruction of the nutrient, which only decomposes at 190°C, [35] despite popular opinion. However, pressure cooking, roasting, frying and grilling food is more likely to reach the decomposition temperature of vitamin C. Longer cooking times also add to this effect, as will copper food vessels, which catalyse the decomposition.

In a nutshell, for tea it should be ok. You probably will break down a small portion of it, but the vasy majority should be ok.

The biggest question is why they are enriching tea with vitamin C. Probably to sell it to those that believe that vitamin C in high(er) doses is good for the immune system which to my knowledge has been fairly hit or miss. So thats probably the scam more than the vitamin C is going to be destroyed.

I can't say that supplementing with Vit C has ever made a difference, but, if I feel like I'm getting a cold fresh orange juice can work wonders. I think that fresh fuit and fresh (not pasteurized) juice is the best way to get vits.

The next time you feel like a cold is coming on juice about quart of fresh orange juice and drink it through out the day. ..|

On the other hand, this green tea with vitamin c added is probably crappy tea. You might as well get yourself some quality loose tea and a separate (quality) vitamin c pill.
Is there any good green tea in teabags  And I don't want vitamin c pills ..

THANK YOU. Someone actually read my post. I have to admit I only checked the german wikipedia - which didn't mention that part.

you can find them in Asian grocers.
Loose tea is much nicer. :)

Oh we have plenty of tea shops around here, and most of them with quite good personnel - you can try a different green tea every week ;)
