I take a multi-vitamin every day (just your typical "one-a-day" type thing for men) but I was wondering, just how much of this gets absorbed by your system? They're the hard vitamins and I've heard stories and rumors that they don't fully break down in your body and basically go in one end and out the other.

I've put these vitamins in water before and it takes forever for them to disintegrate. I'm sure your stomach acids break them down better than plain water would, but does anyone know for sure if these vitamins even do any good? Would liquid-type vitamins (or maybe chewables) be better?

Just wondered if anyone had any real information on the effectiveness of the hard multi-vitamins.

Thanks :)

If you listen to the establishment, (ie drug companies and doctors), they will tell you that multi-vitamins are a waste of money. Traditional drugs, antibiotics are teh way to go.

Vitamins in water will not give you a clue as to whether they go in one end and come out the other. There are many vitamins that come in a soft gel form if your worried about having your vitaimins go in your mouth and out your ass! lol!

What generally happens is that when taking large doses of say Vitamin C, teh body tends to eliminate the excess.

You did not specify what kinf of "one-a-day" vitamin your taking either, but I think you'd be better off with some form of Soft Gel vitamin.

Well, usually just the One-a-Day brand or equivalent.

I think I've seen the chewables before but haven't really looked into them much. Maybe I'll check those out and the softgel types. I'm not a real big eater, so I know I don't get enough nutrients from food alone.

Thanks for your answer :)

Hmm..short answer would be not as much as your body requires. There's a reason they're called supplements and not recommended to replace normal food.

Everything I've read about vitamin supplements is that they're only helpful if you're not getting enough already in your diet. And 'enough' is considerably less than the recommended daily dosage actually. Even then, a simple daily multivitamin is all you'd really need.

The main problem is that many of the substances in vitamins are not readily absorbed or come in forms your body can't use.

Well, yes, that's very true. I'd never use vitamins to replace food. I just felt it was necessary to take them because although I eat healthy most of the time (with the exception of my occasional Taco Bell fix) I don't feel I get enough nutrients from food alone. But who knows, maybe I do. I just don't really eat a whole lot. I eat enough, but not a lot.

Yeah, that's what I kinda figured. I suppose it won't hurt to take them, but I wondered if I was just wasting my time and money.

Thanks for the answers, guys :)

Chris,
Its good to have doubts and let it out. Yes, there are supplements out there that are not doing what they are suppose to do.It doesn't matter if they are in tablet, soft gel, chewable, capsule, or liquid form. The most important is the company's Excellency in the Field. I believe in that. The experience, the research, the knowledge, the track record, etc. Its all about the black and white. Many experiences out there or testimonials from consumers can be trusted. But so can the researches from a third party. Its the matter of choices and logic. So, keep looking. You are always welcomed to pm me.Take care...|

I take a liquid multivitamin supplement called Liquid Health. I get a lot of benefit from it. Pill form vitamins, especially B vitamins, tend to make me sick. Liquid Health contains all the daily vitamins, minerals and trace elements you need plus herbs.

As stated, basically, you can get all the nutrients you need in your diet. I know several doctors that say vitamins are a waste of money. That said, I take one daily.... just because it is part of my routine. Maybe I do piss out most of it. The only thing you really need to worry about is taking vitamins D, A, K and E as these are fat soluble and not as easy to excrete. So if you get too much, it's hard to get rid of and you can get toxic amounts. Doesn't happen often and most multivitamins don't have much of these. The rest, if you want to take one, go for it. It's not a supplement for food as you already know. And your body is amazing at getting rid of extra stuff other than the above mentioned.
