Vixta - A Vista Clone?

I thought this was a joke when I saw it. Someone took Fedora and made it look like Vista - with Aero! Anyone tried it? They can't possibly have made Linux easy to use, have they? Doesn't Linux have all that security crap built into it to stop you from doing anything unless you're a programmer?

Vixta could be the Linux distribution with the smallest possible target audience ever: Linux users who love the look and feel of Windows Vista and wished their Linux desktops could look more like Windows.

Vixta is a Fedora-based distro with a custom KDE-based interface. You get widgets, a Vista-like start menu and taskbar, and evil looks from your die-hard open-source buddies. Under the hood, there's no mistaking Vixta for Windows. If you're a Linux user, that's probably a good thing, but somehow we doubt Vixta will convince many Windows users to switch to Linux.

You can't run Windows apps without the help of WINE, and while the menu system may look like Windows, all the underlying programs are Linux equivalents. That means you get Konqueror instead of Explorer, OpenOffice instead of Office, and Firefox instead of, well, Firefox. OK, maybe switching isn't really that hard, but try telling that to your grandma.

What I mean is, there has got to be something wrong with this Vixta thing. People wouldn't pay $400 for Vista if they could get something like this for free. Micsoft would be outta business in no time.

I'm afraid to try it because I don't want to screw up the Vista Home installation on my laptop. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this thing and what experience they may have had. I don't think you can run Vixta "live", but I don't really know anything about it.

Anyone here know anything about Linux? Why don't people use it?

You could try knoppix with beryl. that is a "live" linux distribution that runs completely from a CD or DVD and installs nothing to your computer. it's made partly now to help folks see what they can and can't do with linux. some versions of linux are relatively easy to use other's are not. i've not tried this Vixta thing, i don't think it has a live cd/dvd version.

Are all these icons bouncing all over the place? Paul Fitts (Fitts' Law) would go nuts. He was concerned with the predictability of hitting an object. This looks more like an arcade game. I see they reproduced the BSOD

i agree i wouldn't download it and try it especially if it's been modified to look like vista there might be programming errors or flaws but that's just my guess since i don't have a mac or use linux

i don't believe those boucining objects are meant to be clicked

i for one am waiting since quite some time for a steering law optimized "start" menu
