Many people say the swastika is a peace symbol and or a German pride symbol and wear it on their clothes.. purses... their wall.. etc.

Same goes for the confederate flag. A symbol of racism and the right to treat black Americans as property and objects.

So are these all symbols of pride and should not offend people for any reason?

Or are you someone who feels they are signs of hate and discrimination.. and the feel to put other minorities down to feel superior?

Look at the first photo of the hot yet evil boy saluting the Nazi Symbol... with a confederate flag in the background.

Also before you vote.. here is something you all need to see regarding the holocaust.

They say you can't change the world but you can put a dent in it.. thts what im doing here.

Your two options are far too limited. There are many degrees between an object being viewed as purely a symbol of hate and an innocuous symbol representative of heritage that "nobody should be offended" by.

Which also makes this poll inauthentic as it leads the people being polled to view it only as a symbol of hate since few people would say "nobody should be offended" by it.

I'm not voting, because I agree the choices are too limited. I don't care for what the swastika has come to represent. Same with the Confederate flag. But, Americans enjoy "freedom of expression" as outlined in our Constitution.

I detest flag burning, but I won't tell someone else they can't protest that way. I'm not an enthusiast of Robert Mapplethorpe's photography, but I'll defend it as artistic expression. Under the same standard I would defend those who would display a swastika or Confederate flag.

Please, I voted "Nothing But Symbols of HATE"...........

...........with the following qualifications...........

The following documents identify "the right to freedom of speech".

U.S. Constitution: First Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
(!)

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Preamble

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people, ...

Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

2. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.

Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights

Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. this right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises.

Article 13 of the American Convention on Human Rights

1.Everyone has the right to freedom of thought and expression. This right includes freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing, in print, in the form of art, or through any other medium of one's choice.

Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights

1. Every individual shall have the right to receive information.

I feel as if I can't really vote.

It is not because I am in favour of either symbol. But as a European I understand the hatred and symbolism of the swastika more than the confederate flag.

But I think it is how people react to symbols more than anything else. A number of years ago a St. George's Cross (the flag of England) was used by a far right party and seen as some how their symbol. But over the last few years this has been reclaimed as the flag of England and is no longer a symbol solely of a far right hate organisation.

I doubt the swastika can ever be seen again as the symbol of peace it once was (before the Nazis claimed it).

The confederate flag I know to little about. Is it possible for it to represent Southern pride for all people - I don't know but would value the opinions of others on this.

The key dividing issue that bonded the south vs. the north was slavery. As such, many members of American society view it as a symbol of Southern, white oppression and it is therefore viewed as a hateful symbol.

While I support people's rights to free speech, I find the confederate flag as a historical symbol in a museum fine but as a symbol to be touted in public, governmental locations an abomination.

If I vote yes, am I not saying that the South is/was nothing but of a bunch of Nazis?

If I vote no, am I not saying that there's nothing WRONG with that whole Nazi holocaust thing?

Maybe next time, we can take a poll on "Have you stopped molesting your cousin?"

Lex

Your Poll is asking two questions, without room for variance.

It's like having a poll that asks:

Do you like:

a) Chocolate and strawberry ice cream
or
b) Don't like ice cream.

Some people like chocolate, but they don't like strawberry, and vice versa. You don't provide enough answers for everybody to participate.

As someone who has experienced direct hatred with those flags as a backdrop, I see them as nothing but symbols of hatred now.

Mmmmm. . . Butter-Pecan. . . (You're right, plus the two options leave-out other possibilities.)

I agree. However, I recognize the right of the bearers of those emblems to use them as an expression within their constitutional rights. If, on the other hand, the bearers commit a crime (say, gay bashing or racial harassment) then they are guilty of a crime. But free expression is not a crime.

In that respect I guess I'd view the swastika and Confederate flag harbingers of danger! I'm certainly not going to enter any place where these emblems are flown over the entrance! And I'll certainly turn a cynical/cautious eye toward those who brandish them!

I have nothing against the south.. never said that. I never said all

sorry my bf was kissing my neck so i hit reply and never got to finish.

ANYWAY what im against is the rednecks that make the rest of the south look bad by flashing the flag and holding KKK meetings.. and making southern American and the entire USA look bad.

Braggart! :)

It's sad to say, but as long as people live beyond 4 years old, there will be bigotry. Conversely, take 10 toddlers, fat, thin, black, white, red, yellow, brown, male, female. . . you get the idea. . . and put 'em in a room together. They will be absolutely blind to all those "differences" and see only "friends." No judgment. No prejudice. No misogyny. Just beautiful little people who LIKE each other at first sight! What a blessing!

Hate isn't something we're born with. It's a learned trait.

But, DANGIT. . . those damned Republicans!!! JK! :)

>>>I have nothing against the south.. never said that.

Well, then, answer MY question - have you stopped molesting your cousin?

Lex

I truly can't answer the poll, because it is far too vague with what people would mean.

The biggest problem is, that when people think of the Confederate flag, they think KKK, which it is not originally from.

It is from the Civil War of the United States, in which the south fought against the north for the right to own slaves, which they needed for the economic and agricultural ventures.

Same with the Swastika. It is a literally ancient symbol, probably most recognized by intellectuals as a key symbol to the Hindu, Buddhist, Jainism and Mithraism. There is more information, but you get my point.

Both symbols have their own starting point in history, and later on it was taken and warped into a disgusting abuse of it's original intent. Neither those who voted, nor the person who posted this, truly understand what exactly it is they are talking about. Hell, I don't understand them fully, but I'm not making a vague statement about them.

Nope...I actually think of the Confederacy. In fact, specifically Stonewall Jackson from a picture of him in a text book when I was a wee boy. But Lee's signing it all away is a close second visual image.;)

i never molested my cousin..? In fact im a sexual abuse victim why do that to someone else.. that was outta nowhere.

I believe they should be used for historical reasons because people will forget the seriousness and don't want to educate themselves. History WILL repeat itself.

Someone in the south who truly has pride in their home doesn't use a negative symbol.. I have respect for someone from the south the same as someone expressing love for their home from another country or area of living. There is good and bad in everyone and everywhere... its the symbol.

True.. the swastika used to be a peace sign... but world wide nobody will view it that way again. That's just the way things are

No the KKK did not start the confederate flag.. racist slave owners that did not want to be forced to give them up by the USA did.

Relax Cher. G-Lex was just putting his own spin on the old chestnut "Sir, have you quit beating your wife?" See, it's a closed-end question intended to be answered "yes" or "no." Nobody would answer "no," for obvious reasons. And to answer "yes" implies that one USED to beat his wife. By its design, the question leaves no room for a short-answer denial of one EVER having beaten his wife. The audience gasps and looks in horror at the person being questioned waiting to find out whether he is a current wife beater, or a past wife beater. He is automatically on the defensive and must explain (hopefully) that he has never beaten his wife. Meanwhile, the cynical shadow of suspicion has been cast! It's the same sort of creative question design used in deposing Presidents in the late 1990s.
