I'm no fan of Walmart, but I'm glad that they are doing this. Hopefully it will make more PC users realize that Microsoft is not the be all, end all of what they do with their computers.

I've never heard of gOS... I'm downloading the live CD off their website to take a look at it. Though, I'm a little skeptical due to the sparse amount of information on their website.

Didnt WalMart (some mass retailer) try this once before with Lindows ?

Maybe this time it will 'work'

The problem with Lindows is that it was run by a jackass CEO and the name and look was likely to confuse people or give people the impression they were getting a cheap knockoff of Windows rather an alternative to Windows.

In that sense this could do better than Lindows, especially since it takes advantage of the familiarity most internet users have with Google. I know the price point is the reason Walmart is doing this, but I'm just not sure if Walmart customers are the best demographic to test this type of transition out on.

hm there isn't ANY info on the website. i have to try it though :)

OK I tested the Live CD of gOS out and here's the deal...

First of all, it won't fit on a 700MB CD so I burned it to a dvd+r to test it.

It still needs a lot of work, in my opinion.

It's a modified version of ubuntu 7.10 that uses a customized enlightenment desktop instead of gnome. That should make it more responsive than using vanilla ubuntu on low end PCs, but still give users access to ubuntu's software repositories.

It looks like it could be fine for grandpa, grandma and other non technical users provided they put some more effort into simplifying things a bit. Although, I don't really think that enlightenment is a good choice for simplifying the UI. It would have been much better if they based the interface on a customized desktop version of OpenMoko.

I think it looks like utter crap. You get what you pay for!

I paid over twice as much just for a video card, which itself has more memory than that pc. But then again, I'm a gamer. I bet you'd be lucky to be able to play solitaire on that thing.

I can't speak for the hardware, but the software value will be enormous for people that are used to paying for all their software or resorting to installing spyware/malware-laden "freeware" or pirated software.

Clearly this is a LOW END $200 PC. It's not meant to compete with high or mid range systems. Comparing it to those systems is quite misleading.

As far as getting what you pay for, I have a top notch system with a GREAT OS and thousands of great applications that are both free as in beer and free as in freedom (ubuntu). Whereas, most Windows or Mac users have paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for OS and software or are running pirated versions. Not to mention the security issues and the proprietary lock in that those systems bring.

So is it worth downloading to test it? Is it a live DVD?

I have it queued up in my downloader just in case :D

It's a a Live CD that is a 728MB ISO. If you like to test different distros you might want to try it, but it is not much different than installing and running e17 (enlightenment) on your ubuntu system.

It has its own gOS theme for e17, which looks alright and it makes use of mozilla's webrunner for the google search, but that's all stuff you could do on your own. Quite honestly, I'm confident that I myself could produce a much more polished and user friendly version of ubuntu in two weeks than what gOS currently is.

It looks

a) Ugly
b) Like it would break / have hardware probs in a few uses
c) Whatever's in it, it looks mighty slow.

Good attempt though, whatever their motive is, this is still internet/information for the masses.

You guys are missing the point, it's for low end families, and it' meant to continue the free exchange of ideas and information. For this I applaud them. This is a good thing for WalMart to do for the families of America.

^ Agree

This box will be OK for surfing the web and doing email - Which is what many/most folks only do

Agree with you Noelie 100%.

And the fact that its rubbish aint really a good thing of walmart and they need no applaud for it.

I bought a refurbished business machine with the sameish specs with XP for $72. It wasn't a big box store, but it was a nice retail with about 20 stores across the province.

Gave it to my parents to replace their aging PIII sys.

Wal-Mart has sold out of the $200 Everex Linux PCs. They got a shipment of 10,000 computers from Everex, and Wal-Mart restricted sales of the computers by offering them in only a handful of stores (only about one Wal-Mart in five was allowed to stock the Everex Green PC). Nevertheless, Wal-Mart sold out of all 10,000 Everex PCs in two weeks! Looks like Linux has found a niche on the desktop!

T-Rexx used to say that 2008 would finally be the year when Linux began making the move onto the desktop. How well he understood the market!

Wal-Mart annoyed me with this PC. I wanted to buy one (or at least get a first-hand look at it). Although I live in one of the twenty-five biggest cities in America, none of the twenty-odd Wal-Marts locally stocked this PC. I drove forty miles to a small Wal-Mart in the country, only to find them sold out when I got there! :grrr:

I'm sure Wal-Mart needs no retailing lessons from me. But if they want to offer special value products to the public, they're going to have to keep some stock on their shelves. I thought this came close to a "bait and switch" tactic. They did indeed try to steer me toward the same computer with Vista for $299, which I didn't want (and neither did anyone else, apparently - they had dozens of them).

And why they've made finding this computer so difficult, I don't understand. Why send stock to tiny stores in the country, and ignore the Wal-Mart "Super Centers" in the cities?

I actually am a Google fan. While the do store a lot of our information, they don't give it away and no humans read the info, only computers. And they make sure that the government is just when requesting info on users. Remember that the refused to hand over information to the government when they wanted it for no reason.

I love Google, and I think this is great. These people will have at their hands, the entire Google package which can help them be organized and use the internet so much easier.
