It looks to me like it's made from blue corn. I've bought blue coirn taco shells before, and they were practically black, and they had no artificial coloring in them.

I thought they did, too, but I haven't seen them around here in ages. (Then again, I'm rarely in the snacks aisle unless I run into a roadblock of shopping carts and take a shortcut through it, but I don't pay much attention to what's in there.)

I don't want a free black taco.

My guess is the R and D department wanted to sell a blue corn taco, but then found that the blue corn crop was too small for the fast food chain and too expensive to put into production. Black food coloring was the next best thing.

That may be dumb but I can think of no smarter explanation for such stupid food.

Back to our regularly scheduled thread -- If not blue corn, may not be artificial food colouring either. A popular colourant for Black pasta is octopus ink - edible and natural, non-toxic.

Yes Boxer they still do - based in Louisville, KY. Spun off from Pepsico some years back. BLACK TACO RULES!! The commercial is all over the World Series so when I see it I text my friend "Black taco" and she responds "black eye" and so on!!

A side note: Taco Bell also has a taco with a red shell. It's called the volcano taco. It's just a taco with a hot "volcano" sauce.
