Washer and dryer in 1 device

How come this isn't a thing? Imagine putting your clothes in the device and turns it on. It washes it, spins, and acts as a dryer. How come it's not a thing yet?

I owned one of those once and it often broke down. Now all of my flats have a separate washer and dryer and no-one ever complains.

I had one in my fifth wheel camper. The trick was to get one that had a vented dryer. Capacity was dismal but it would do what I needed of it. Sheets and bed linen would still need to go to a washateria. Slendide was the brand.

You can set the machine to go straight through from wash to dry, the only problem with that is that the maximum load for drying is only half the maximum load for washing. Alternatively, it can be used like a normal tumble dryer. In either case, my experience is that it dries things too much if that's possible, leaving masses of creases which are virtually impossible to iron out.

The type I had used the heater element to heat the space in the washer drum, there was no additional air flow like a tumble dryer. I think it had a condensor to collect the moisture and then would pump it out. I found that the washing came out stiff like cardboard. As you say washing came out too dry.

When I was a kid there was a "Duomatic" Washer/Dryer All-In-One from Philco-Bendix.
The Duomatic goes back to 1953 and was available with gas, or electric, dryer heating.

^ You said you were gonna post after the phone call, and you did, lol.

As soon as I heard about the concept today, the very first thought out of my brain today was something like "It's got more parts and systems in this one unit, so it will probably break down more often." The thread seems to be saying that, too. I was alive in 1953, but certainly not old enough to be paying enough attention to remember the machine almost 70 years later (we never had one).

"Honey, are you coming in to watch Monday Night Football with me?" "No, not yet, I think the clothes I put in last Wednesday are ready to come out."
