I just got a notice that if you don't have a direct deposit or keep a balance of $1500 in your account you will have to pay $5 to $10 monthly depending if you want mailed or online statements starting in August.

I do have another bank where I qualify for free checking, and a Chase account which so far is free as long as I do 5 debit charges per month (which is fine by me)

So Wells Fargo used to be Wachovia and that is what I signed up with, but I guess the Wells Fargo thing was a bait and switch. The only reason I like them so much was because they are close to me and have many locations but I am done with them.

To make matters worse they won't even tell you what the changes are in the email. You have to go to their websites, sign in and go hunting for it.

I bank with 2 banks as well...I havent received the WF notice....You don't take advantage of Direct Deposit for your Paycheck?

Yes, but I have it at my main bank, which is TD and I love them because they are open 7 days a week and two weekdays later than most banks.

Right now I have 3 banks, but Wells Fargo can go fuck themselves, in a week or two I am closing that account.

My mom told me about this a couple of week ago. I am thinking about switching my credit union at work.

Wells Fargo nickle and dimed me to death years ago. I left and went to a local credit union.. never been happier with a bank. WF can rot as far as I'm concerned.

I had the same problem with Bank of America a few years ago, come in and get free checking, a few months later it was a bait and switch to start making people pay a fee.

So mine's free, no minimum balance, as long as I have a source of income coming in once a month. My paychecks are direct deposited bi-weekly, so I'm good.

Well the problem is if you want to do banking with more than one bank most people don't have more than one direct deposit.

I looked online and there are a few banks that do give free checking with little or no money in the account, say around $100 and no DD requirement.

For now I will stick with TD and Chase.

I left WF several months ago when they tried to charge for using your debit card. There was a thread started about it and many guys were upset and going to leave. There was a huge number of people closing their accounts that WF changed the policy. When I went in to close my account they tried to talk me into staying by saying "we've reassessed the plan and aren't going to implement it" I told the lady I was still leaving because they tried to rip me off and it was only a matter of time until they tried again. Guess it didn't take them very long to come up with another scheme.

I joined a local credit union and am extremely happy. I refinanced my car and dropped my payment by seventy dollars a month and am in the process of switching my credit card over to the credit union. I have direct deposit, free checking, online banking. Basically everything WF had except I'm not getting ripped off. Big banks are like the airlines. They are looking to make a buck any way they can. Your only recourse is to close your account. If they back off on this stupid idea they will come up with another. Once Dodd/Frank limited the transaction fees, banks started looking for ways to recoup the money they were losing.

...LOL.....I work for TD...The Dirty South experienced the Canadian invasion a while back when they bought us out...We havent transitioned to the 8am to 8pm schedule and probably wont for a long ass time...I work @ one of the Service centers so we have a different work schedule VS the branches....A lot of the branch employees had a cow when TD wanted the banks to open for half-a-day on the weekends...The customers are loving it....

I still have Wells Fargo because my first bank account as a teen was with First Union. They were bought out by Wachovia, then Wells Fargo took over...So I've been with the same bank for 17yrs...Regardless of the changes Wells go through I'm not leaving anytime soon...

TD started as Commerce Bank in NJ if I'm not mistaken, ever since TD bought them out they have gotten worse.

The TD bank look was the Commerce bank look in NJ, all their banks basically look the same with a slight variation. I even have an old Blue Commerce Bank pen which is exactly like the Green TD pens they have now.
