We already had a gay president?

I was watching the history channel's "President" series and they were saying James Buchanan was the first homosexual president!

Does anyone else know anything about him?

The irony is that he paid for slaves to be freed and Americans living today lived in a time where blacks were hosed down for voting. Talk about regressing. This man freed slaves only for them to be humiliated while trying to vote.

Wow. America was really ahead of the times.

No one knows for sure, but a lot of people think he was.

There is still speculation that Lincoln was as well, based on some of his letters to and his friendship with a close male companion.

I thought people thought he may have been bi?

Thanks for bringing this thread up, LostLover. I watched the series over the weekend, too. Mighty interesting. Never heard this about him. The times were surely different.

Pretty good series,huh?

I'm downloading it now. Very good. Makes you appreciate this country. I just need to watch the most recent presidents' episode. Got the end of it with Obama, aka "No Drama Obama".

Wasn't it cool that they devoted half an hour to Lincoln? And seeing those top hots was cool too.

Believing that he or Lincoln was gay is just wishful thinking, as is the case with David and Jonathan in the Bible. It's the result of imposing modern views and kinds of relationships on other times and other customs, and of seeking heroes in the past.

The Wiki article says nothing about him being gay, or even suspected of it, and in fact points out that such relationships were common at the time. This is, really, much ado about nothing.

Maybe true, but just by numbers we probably have had one or two queer presidents. Do you believe that not to be true?

I think it unlikely. Considering probability, there's a very good chance we haven't, even drawing randomly. But presidents aren't drawn randomly, and unless a man was very, very deep in the closet, I think the selection process for becoming president reduces the odds.

Downloading via torrent or something legit? What's the show called?

Via Xbox Live. Legit too. "Free" too.

It's very well worth it.

Makes you realize how little you know about the country and all the major issues each president faced.

One president accused another candidate of sleeping with a married woman. And then when he became president he did the same thing.

One president, William Henry Harrison, tried to prove he wasn't too old for office. So you know what he did? He gave the longest inaugural address (3 hours or something like that), caught pneumonia that day and died days later.

What's also cool is that on each president they tell you his personality flaws as well. "Horrible speaker" or "drunkard" or "extremely paranoid".

Madison or one of the other earlier presidents actually tried limiting free speech. He tried making it against the constitution to criticize the president. He had a good tenure other than that. Which president was that?

Oh, I think I got that series a long time ago. I think I also PAID for it too... so that's annoying. It is simply called "The Presidents", right? The final chapter only goes up to Dubya. On XBL (on there now myself), the only options are "The Presidents" (the one I have) and "The Presidency Revealed" for The History Channel, the latter only being 6 episodes covering FDR, JFK, Nixon and Reagan.

I like the video marketplace on XBL, but the prices are ridiculous. I prefer digital distribution over buying DVDs, but $2 an episode makes DVDs a better deal. Although buying Fawlty Towers for $2 an episode is a damn fine deal.

Heh, back when the Simpsons was good, like a decade ago, there was an episode mocking the lesser presidents with a song.

Millhouse was meant to mock President Millard Fillmore--the most forgotten presidency in our history.

I think Moe was supposed to mock Nixon.

And Mayor Quimby I guess was a pre-Clinton Clinton.

You're probably referring to John Adams and the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Or maybe you have something else in mind?
