Quincy Jones Gathers Stars For 'We Are The World' Haiti Session

More than 75 mega-stars gathered Monday to re-record the 1985 charity anthem "We are the World" in the same Hollywood recording studio where the original was cut 25 years ago.

Pink, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, the Jonas Brothers, Kanye West, Tony Bennett, Jennifer Hudson, Akon and other musical luminaries stood shoulder to shoulder on risers at Henson Recording studios, singing their hearts out and hoping to help Haiti.

Quincy Jones, who produced the 1985 anthem, announced last week that he planned to redo the song to benefit recovery from the deadly Jan. 12 earthquake in Port-au-Prince.

Written by Michael Jackson and Richie, the original "We Are the World" thundered up the charts when it was released on the radio and in record stores in March 1985.

'We Are The World': Behind the Scenes

More than 75 stars -- from the legendary Barbra Streisand to rapper Lil Wayne and actor Vince Vaughn -- gathered at Hollywood's Henson Recording Studios yesterday (Feb. 1) to record the 25th anniversary version of "We Are The World."

Like its predecessor, "We Are The World - 25 For Haiti" features a diverse lineup: this time ranging from Streisand and Celine Dion to actor Jeff Bridges. But it also boasts a major hip-hop contingent (Kanye West, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Akon, Kid Cudi, Drake), young newcomers (Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber) and major-league high technology.

"This is like running through hell with gasoline underwear," said Quincy Jones with a laugh late last night during a five-minute recording break.
The video for "We Are the World - 25 For Haiti" will world premiere in 3D during NBC's coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Friday, Feb. 12. Academy Award-winning writer/director Paul Haggis ("Crash," "Million Dollar Baby") directed the video, an online version will feature green screen, allowing viewers to place themselves in the We Are the World lineup as well.

Proceeds from the contemporary recording and the accompanying video will go directly to Haitian relief efforts through the We Are The World Foundation, a newly created not-for-profit organization comprised of board members Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, Wyclef Jean, Paul Haggis, AEG Live president/CEO Randy Phillips and Ambassador Louis Moreno of the Inter-American Development Bank. Helping to underwrite the project was Visa.

Celine Dion, Lil Wayne, Nick Jonas, Janet Jackson and dozens of other music stars gathered to record the 25th anniversary version of "We Are the World" in Hollywood on Monday, and ABC News cameras were there to capture the historic moment. The recording was organized by Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie, who co-wrote the original "We Are the World" with Michael Jackson.

Janet Jackson tackled her brother Michael's solo from the original "We Are the World," while Lil Wayne sang the part performed by Bob Dylan. "Did I do a better job than Bob Dylan? Hell, no," Wayne said after the recording.

At 83 years old, Tony Bennett is the elder statesmen of the new "We Are the World" lineup, while 15-year-old Justin Bieber clocks in as the youngest.

"We Are the World - 25 for Haiti" will premiere in 3D on Feb. 12, during the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on NBC.

My friend said it was "surreal. I can't explain it any more than that." :)

"It opens with Justin Bieber doing the Lionel Richie line..."

That's pretty much all I needed to know.

This was a straight up mess. I'm embarassed for them that this was to go to a good cause. What they showed, Michael would be rolling over in his grave. There was no need for all those rappers. And WTF was up with Wyclef Jean? Why have Janet on the track if you couldn't even hear her? Michael was on the track over her.

I agree. The new ver is a mess. Justin Bieber doing the opening? WTF with that. . .

That was a damn mess. First off they hyped Janet’s involvement in this and she was in it for five seconds. Also that was a horrible cut and paste job with her and Michael. The song was just all over the place, Mary, Celine, Pink, Jennifer Hudson, and Usher sounded good from what I can remember. Why did they give Nicole Shitzinger a solo part, who’s dick did she suck to get that. Don’t get me wrong the full version sounded a little better until I heard Lil wayne on the track, sounding like Flavor Flav with that autotune. This was something that shouldn’t have been done.

WTF happen at 2:29.
such a disappointment at this remake.

I thought I was the only one who would think it was a trainwreck. I felt embarrassed for everyone involved and embarrassed for myself for having watched it. The whole Haiti relief effort has turned into a neverending circus of people generating publicity for themselves.

Oh my gosh...I LOVE it...This new version is POLISHED to perfection...From the Belting Divas to the Poetic Rappers Quincy Jones made this production "relevant" for 2010...

For those of you wondering what was going on with Wyclef..He was singing in his native tongue..So much Emotion in his voice it gave me goose bumps...

You guys need to stop judging singing styles and listen to the Love and sincerity in all the Vocals featured...

Prior to her GRAMMY performance it's been so freaking Long since i've seen Celine Dion..I Love watching her sing her face off....She still got the Pipes...LOL..That is the Celine I know and Love..

Radio should embrace this song and I will order my copy online...

^^^I like the LOOKS Jennifer gave Jamie Foxx when he did his BEST "Ray Charles" impression...

Okay Jamie we know you won an Oscar for being a great impressionist. We also KNOW you had a HIT single sampling a "Ray Charles track" giving your best singing impression of the man...

Please give it a Fucking rest..

I agree. Except Janet and Michael had their part intertwined. 5 seconds is a mess!
