IMG_2486.jpegSo, mama duck had her ducklings in our backyard. She was left with three and then only with this one. We had been feeding them as we do with all the wild birds that come to our yard everyday. A few days ago as I was putting my flock of chickens away, this little guy was running around our yard chirping and looking for his mama. She was nowhere to be found and he was being bullied by the big ducks. I did not want to get involved so I came back in the house but my conscious got the best of me. It was a cold evening and I knew he did not stand a chance. I got a net and chase him around until I got it. Because we have chickens I have everything it needs to survive. We named it Loren. So far it is having a good time, eating and drinking. We have a heater and everyday I take it out, let it walk around a bit and then cuddle it for a while. It seems quite healthy and content. Will keep you posted.

I'm dead. That thing is adorable!

Make sure you keep an eye out for mama duck. Loren is beautiful but belongs in the wild.

Good luck!

Thanks, the mother has vanished. We will take good care of it and when it can fend for itself, it will be released back into the wild.

Aww, Loren is growing! Starting to molt and it looks like flight feathers are sprouting. Very cool..

I don't know, maybe the local feed store or pet food store has actual duck food?

if one is looking for "duck" food, check with the Purina people. They have varieties for all types of waterfowl

We have been raising chickens for many years now, have seven hens at the moment. We have also raised ducks before. Loren is a very lucky duck I would say, it found the right yard.

Well, Loren left us today. She flew out of the enclosure I put her in everyday. I knew it was coming but it is still makes me sad. I have been taking care of it for over two months. It has been hanging out by the lake shore and won't even come anywhere near me. I wish it well and hope that it makes friends with the other ducks out there.

Loren has made some friends on the lake but she pretty much comes back to our yard everyday. She looks very healthy and happy. She also spends a lot of time at the neighbor's yard, they are always feeding the wild life with lots of good stuff. Loren has also started taking care of two small ducklings that were abandoned by their mother. It makes my heart so happy when I see her swimming around with her two younger friends, they also sleep in our yard together.
