Well it's got to that stage where I really need to have a dedicated website instead of using a blog.

For any of you with your own web site, any recommendations or horror stories of particular web hosting companies?

what kind of content are you planning to host? what are your requirements in regards of databases, scripting languages, access etc?

just web hosting, or server housing? vservers?

Purely web hosting. Non-porn, combination of images and text using Dreamweaver (cos I don't have access or knowledge of anything else). It's a simple no frills site for my art studio.

I've had a couple domains just for fun/hobbies mostly through GoDaddy. Since they're one of the largest registrars they have a lot of add-on options and they've got the automation down pat - I had trouble with waiting for smaller hosts having to do things manually that because of their setup I couldn't configure myself (phpBB or WordPress config - the better hosting companies have automated buttons/scripts for this) or missing steps, problems with permissions, mail server names/IP's changing, etc. Tiny hosting providers might give you personal care (but might also be resellers of the larger providers), but it's the middle guys that I think things tend to slip through the cracks, so I would look to larger ones.

GoDaddy's menu interface and account management options are cluttered as hell (you can see this in evidence even before signing up just from their site to attract new business, heh), though. On the plus side, they're basically every few days sending out coupon and discount codes for renewals, new services, etc. to customers so you can save money off their prices which I feel are already fairly competitive.

http://www.1and1.com and http://www.webhostingpad.com/ are others I've heard about, but don't have any personal experience with.

http://drivehq.com/ I use them for uploading security camera video but they have full range of services. Cheap and reliable. Good customer service when I've had to contact them. You even get 1G for free.

is justhost.com or hostmonters.com any good?

I still don't have a site yet but was thinking about it. :D

then it basically doesn't matter. choose something cheap that gives you control over the domain and maybe allows you to allow the domain for e-mail. i believe there is some kind of dreamweaver plugin for some webservers that allows you directly upload to the server .. avoid those offers, especially if they cost more.

keep an eye on included traffic and what happens if you use more.

if you want to be a good guy, choose a local company. also usually gives you better support and someone to yell at in person ;)
