Gone With the Win

By Michael Weiss
Posted Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at 4:23 PM ET

Bloggers deplore the return of Trent Lott to the Senate Republican leadership. They also question the timing of the New York Times'revelation that generals are against a "phased withdrawal" from Iraq, and cheer the rewritten Pakistani rape laws.

Gone with the win, back with a thump: Republican Sen. Trent Lott, who was removed from the Senate majority leadership in 2002 after suggesting the country would have been better with a segregationist President Strom Thurmond, won the minority whip position in an intraparty election won by a single vote. Since bloggers were mainly responsible for his downfall four years ago, here's what they have to say about his comeback.

Everything old is new again, and Wonkette drips anti-nostalgia: "Thank god we can return to blatant moral hypocrisy and antebellum racial attitudes without the facade of Western libertarianism or Midwestern tolerance."

GOP elects racist Senator, Trent Lott, to leadership
by Joe in DC - 11/15/2006 10:51:00 AM

CNN just reported that Trent Lott was just elected Minority Whip by his fellow Republican Senators. Lott is now the number two GOP Senator.

You'll recall that Lott was forced from GOP leadership in 2002 after his comments praising segregationist Strom Thurmond:
Lott provoked controversy when he declared at the Thurmond birthday celebration: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years."
Now we see the face of the new GOP. It's the face of the old GOP: an avowed racist.

Trent Lott Once Again Scary, Racist Face of the GOP
TRENT.jpg
Hooray for the return of the Republican party that creeps the hell out of everyone above the Mason-Dixon line!
Sen. Trent Lott (Miss.) is returning to the GOP leadership, having defeated Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) in the election for Minority Whip, 25-24, in voting Wednesday morning.
Thank god we can return to blatant moral hypocrisy and antebellum racial attitudes without the facade of Western libertarianism or Midwestern tolerance.

Trent Lott -- A Dixiecrat Rises From The Dead

It's just another great GOP Moment in Black History:

So -- desperate and grasping at straws -- a stunned GOP confuses the nation by selecting the Brown Front Man Martinez as RNC Chairman and then electing Trent Lott as Minority . It shouldn't be surprising really. In a way, the puzzling choice between Michael Steele and Mel Martinez for RNC Chair makes more sense now.

It's like the other shoe has dropped. They thought we would be dazzled by their tolerance and generosity at elevating a pro-amnesty, soft on the brown invasion Hispanic. They thought it would immunize them from criticism from boosting Trent "Dixiecrat" Lott back as a prominent voice. They thought maybe we'd all forgotten about Lott said this, chuckling indulgently:

"When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

This about the man who said famously while running for President:

"All the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, our schools, our churches." (Source: CNN)
Umm, let me get this straight. So Lott was nostalgic for the days when it was ok to say that kind of thing loudly and publicly into a microphone. Right. Oh I Wish I Was In Dixie, Hurrah, Hurrah!!!

They were wrong. So very wrong. Check out Atrios, MyDD's Chris Bowers and AsiansVote for some more thoughts on not forgetting. And here I was worried that Stephen Colbert wasn't going to have enough material from those GOP goobers to stay funny. I ain't worried no more!

What's interesting is that these choices baffle the left but the Republicans are also sickening their own base. Michelle Malkin, that bat-sh*t crazy racist ho, rounds up some Republican opinion on the leadership moves and let's just say there's a lack of confidence out there in wingnut land. She hates not because he is racist, but because his racist image makes the "Vacant Lott" vulnerable.

There is only one cause, one animating spirit that Trent Lott is committed to: not the South, not the segregationist past, but himself and his future in high office. And now, to save his hide, Lott will shake his pompoms and turn somersaults to please whomever (Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., the Rev. Al Sharpton) can help him stay in power.
He's weak! Who, who will stand up to those now unleashed, powerful darkies and nigger-lovers, I mean Democrats, on the Hill? Certainly Not Lott.

Oh watch out, kidlets. This is going to be an extra-fun 110th Congress coming up. Just you wait for the hijinks to ensue!

Jill Tubman

Conservative blogger Ed Morrissey endorsed Alexander and in a post that should be read IN FULL had some blunt words about Lott and the GOP's inclination to resurrect him:
Opposing Alexander is none other than Trent Lott from Mississippi. Lott had been Majority Leader until an unfortunate remark at Strom Thurmond's birthday party caused a political firestorm. That's not the problem with his candidacy for Whip; he's been punished for his carelessness in hailing Thurmond's Dixiecrat presidential run. My opposition comes from Lott's attitude towards pork, and especially his attitude about the people who oppose pork spending....

....Republicans need to show that they have learned a lesson from their midterm drubbing. They lost their majorities because voters perceived that they had lost touch with the electorate on policy as well as attitude. We sent Republicans to clean up Congress, not to clean up for themselves in porkfests that rival anything that came before them. Trent Lott represents the worst of that class, and the mere idea that he remains in consideration for a leadership position after his commentary this year proves that the GOP hasn't listened hard enough.

If the Senate Republicans want us to take them seriously, then they need to send Trent Lott to the back bench where he belongs. Any Republican Senator who supports Lott in leadership needs to have their head examined.

i've decided to stop being shocked at anything these people do. it's pointless. this is just an extension of their "southern strategy" of appealing to rednecks. i'm surprised they got rid of him to begin with. now, let's watch the nutbags on JUB come out to defend him...it'll go something like "you guys have robert byrd and he was in the klan"...blah, blah, blah. 2 wrongs always make a right with these folks. can't we honestly just separate certain states from the coasts and go on our merry way already? seriously, it's time to give strom and trent what they want and let the south secede...lincoln obviously made a mistake.

its just insane

the republican party seems to be imploding right now

i cant fathom what they are thinking

I've got to say,if the Republicans have now thrown their lot with Lott, which deeply pissed me off....they truly need are delusional.Candy coating an able minority candidate to be a relatively powerless party chairman won't mean a thing if Grand Massa Trent is running the show.

our state is sane enough that i'll bet we could get a secessionist movement going...i say we try, LOL. i don't even wanna join canada...just cut off mass from the rest of the country and let's float out to sea. we'd make a great carribean vacation country.

i think new england just needs to take the constitution and go

its getting obvious to me that alot of conservative folks in the red zones have a downright contempt for it

thank god they will soon be irrelevant in the congress

its clear though that they didnt get the message and have every intention of doing business as usual, even in their disempowered state

Undoubtedly the Bush White House is none too happy about Lott being Minority Whip.

It's further evidence of what a lame duck Bush is. And a slap in Karl Rove's face as well.

The GOP is coming apart at the seams.

Good idea - you're draggin down the country politically

BTW, what happens to Cape Cod real estate if you secede?

glad to see you finally say that you want to ditch the constitution.

pesky political speed bump for you, champ?

I read that Trent is the best guy to slow down the Dems - as in the Dems will try to ram everything down their throat

Perhaps he is the best guy for that

I think it stinks

But I think politics stinks

Kind of a vacuum right now with the Repubs - they just don't know what to do - or even what the right thing to do is

Lots of heads spinning

just got a call from the clue fone

they left a message

putting the guy in a leadership roll that was kicked out for racist comments is a VERY BAD IDEA.

no proof that Trent is a racist

Just like no proof that Robert Byrd is still a Klansman

just a lot of BS

And for a guy who equates Bush with Hitler - which is quite frankly not only reckless, irresponsible and could be construed as anti-semitic, well - you may want to not throw around the so and so is racist bit

oh please

save it.

All parties concerned are aware that the comparison is Pre 39 Hitler to Pre 04 Bush. THis standard Rush Limbaugh answer is what gets you guys in the shit house every time. You are running from the realities of the issue with overemotional blather designed to distract from real issues.

I am the most UN racist member of JUB alive. I am singly focused on the issue to the point where it even bores ME sometimes, so sling that mudd somewhere else, champ.

and i do think there is adequate proof that Lott is a racist, friend. His own party members gave him the heave ho for it just four years back, not the democrats.

read the posts that start off this thread and consider if you are making any sense at all.

Oh so pre 39 Hitler wasn't so bad? was that a bad year for him and he just went off? pre 39 he liked Jews?

Wow - I've never heard that one. And likely never to again I imagine.

And Lott got the heave ho for being a racist? Haven't heard that one either

I think equating Bush and Hitler makes no sense - and that that analogy is much closer to racism than Trent Lott's comment about Strom Thurmond - which was taken out of context.

you are pushing it chance

you know that i am saying that the hitler reference is to hitler before the war years as he was consolidating power.

it is quite attrocious and you have earned a new thread to play in so that you can desist the hijack of this one.

Does anyone else wanna move to the warmer parts of Canada?! Do they own any islands in the Carribbean?!

Delta (and maybe soon-to-be US Airways) is ready when you are with three nonstops a day from wherever the fuck "Somewhere" is.

Don't let the big, plump guy from Manhattan bump into your ass as you try to board the plane.

I have been searching...searching for Andreus's outrage over Senator Biden's racist comments about people who work at Taco Bell...could you give me a link?

oh, by the by....it was Karl Rove who wanted to dump Lott in the first place...and I thought he was oh, so evil.
